2nd U2415 not recognized - new refurb 8700 & GTX 745

Dell XPS 8700 with GTX 745 video card and dual U2415 monitors.
Second monitor says that is not getting a signal nor is it recognized by nvidia display software.

Setup = XPS 8700 GTX 745 HDMI out (there is no DP out) to monitor #1 HDMI in; monitor #1 DP out to monitor #2 DPmini in.

Monitor #2 OSD (On Screen Display) input Source set to Mini DisplayPort.

Monitor says no signal so the connection seems to be there. (If there is no connection it says no cable of the type specified in the OSD config.)
System rebooted. No change.

Do I need to connect the monitor for DP Multi-Stream Transport (MST) function? Both or just the second monitor? EDIT: I tried both and it did not work and I don't find search results looking for gtx 745 dp1.2

Tips appreciated.

Since the available GTX 745 out ports are: Dual Link DVI-D, HDMI, VGA

and the U2415 in ports are HDMI, DP and DPmini

perhaps what I need is either

adapter: Dual Link DVI-D to HDMI or

adapter: Dual Link DVI-D to DP or

adapter: Dual Link DVI-D to DP mini

How can I daisy-chain the monitors with this card?

* You cannot. The video card must have DP out or mDP out to go to #1 monitor DP in or mDP in. Then the #1 DP out port could be used. The DP out on #1 monitor cannot work because you are connecting to #1 monitor HDMI in.

None of your video card ports can connect to DP or mDP via a straight cable. You would need an expensive active converter.

Because your video card does not have DP out or mDP out, you must setup in this way =
GTX 745 HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> #1 U2415 HDMI in
GTX 745 DVI-D out --> DVI to HDMI cable --> #2 U2415 HDMI in

Or, remove that video card and replace it with one that has DP out or mDP out.

Thank you much, Chris. I had managed to find a DVI-D single link to HDMI adapter for the second monitor. Things seem A-OK for the moment, though I see that adapter is more limited than a dual link version (1920 x 1080, 4.59 Gbps, vs. 2048 x 1536, 9.9 Gbps). I ordered a DVI-D dual link to HDMI cable before I found the single link adapter. This would be superior?

Confused. The U2415 can only do 1920x1200 on all of its ports (HDMI, HDMI, DP, mDP). Where are you getting 2048x1536? Perhaps the other cable will get you to 1920x1200.

What about DGTX 745 DVI-D out --> DVI to DP or DP mini cable --> #2 U2415 DP or DP mini in?

The 2048x1536 is from a spec on the max possible for various DVI.

Nvidia control panel is showing 1920x1200 (native) for both monitors now, contrary to what I read and said above, that the DVI-D single would be limited to 1920x1080.

(Lots of probs with loading the forum today... and 'javascript:void(0);' no matter the browser or machine.)

Thank you.

Video card DVI cannot upconvert to monitor DP/mDP via a straight cable. Read this.

The forum will not advise you that you can't post without being logged in or that you are not logged in, it will simply ignore your post requests, leaving you to try to figure out the 'javascript:void(0);' . After several days I figured it out.

Most tedious.

Thank you, Chris. With the adaptive cables, I was not trying to 'upconvert' but rather to 'convert' or 'pass through.'

Since my first post of this reply is being 'moderated' for quite awhile (though I got an email copy with an invalid link), I'll repost rather than wait to see. Of course that will likely just happen again....

* Same thing. A video card DVI cannot convert or pass through to monitor DP or mDP. I still think you would be better suited by replacing that video card with one that has DP out or mDP out.
