Monitor DDC/CI, Microsoft keyboard brightness keys

I have a Dell monitor supporting DDC/CI, a Intel-based PC running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit with a Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, and a new Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID.

The Modern Keyboard has brightness keys (top middle, also F7/F8 if you hold down "fn"), and the monitor can accept brightness changes via DDC/CI (works with the Dell Display Manager software). When I touch the brightness keys, I get a small overlay in the screen top left of the brightness "changing" (is this a Windows overlay), but the actual display brightness does not change.

Is there a way to get the brightness keys working to change the monitor brightness?

Whose technology is responsible for this? Nvidia? Microsoft? Dell?

The Dell monitor team never tested the "Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID" and its software. You should start by searching for Microsoft support of the keyboard and its software. Read through their support articles. Microsoft would be responsible for their keyboard, their keyboard software, and the operating system running all of it through the monitor.

From Dell: "The Dell monitor team never tested the "Microsoft Modern Keyboard with Fingerprint ID" and its software. You should start by searching for Microsoft support."

From Nv*dia: "Microsoft is in charge of display brightness as of Windows 10."

From Microsoft: "adjusting the display brightness using the keyboard keys is controlled by the graphics card installed on your device. …we suggest that you refer to the user guide of your graphics card."

From EVGA: "I'd say Dell."

It appears that the only Dell hardware you have is the monitor. The only Brightness control that the Dell monitor has is in its OSD (On Screen Display) Menu. Which is not going to "talk" to the Microsoft keyboard software. It sounds like the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti was made by EVGA. So first install the EVGA specific GTX 1080 Ti driver. Then open the EVGA Nvidia Control Panel to see its Brightness settings. I doubt that you will see any additions in there concerning this Microsoft keyboard software. Which would then put this back with Microsoft who manage the Windows operating system and the Microsoft keyboard software.

I have the exact same issue with my XPS 13 & U2417H setup, along with Microsoft Surface Keyboard with ID.

I gave up searching for a solution to use the brightness function key and relied on 3rd party apps instead.
