Monitor Keeps Sleeping

We have a Dell system that is about 5 years old.  The 17 inch monitor just today has started to constantly go into sleep mode.  When it is turned on, it comes on for about 2 seconds, then goes into sleep mode.  None of the control buttons seem to operate at these times either.

I'm pretty sure that it is related to the monitor, as I've tried plugging the video cable into my Dell Laptop (very loyal customer - 4th Dell system in a row) and get the exact same response.

Searching on-line I fear that this is the common capacitor problem.  If so, is it worth fixing, or am I better spending <$200 on a 20+ inch monitor?

Thanks;

Ken

Not sure exactly how to determine model.  However, the serial number is ==>  CN-0F5035-64180-523-09RL

It sounds more like the backlight is failing. It would cost more to fix it than it is worth. I would get a Used Flat Panel as a replacement.
