New 2408 WFP - Cannot set 1920x1200 with DVI connection

System Specs:  Gigabyte P35 DS3L,  Intel E8400 3.0ghz,  2gb GSkill DDR2 8500,  and Asus ATi 3850 with Catalyst 8.7 drivers,  WinXP Home.

I've been unable to set the native resolution of 1920x1200 while connected with DVI.  The resolution is there in the list, but when I set it the screen goes into 'power save' for about 10 seconds and then comes back at the previous resolution of 1280x1024.  Resolutions of 800x600, 1024x768 and a couple of others work...the rest do not.

A couple of times a resolution would cause the monitor image be severely garbled.  I would have to wait for the warning countdown reset itself back to the previous resolution.

I tried connecting the DVI cable to the other input/output of the monitor/video card with the same results.

Frustrated, I connected the VGA using the DVI to VGA adapter and can now achieve all resolution settings using the VGA input without any issue.

Is there something I am missing?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

George.

Just to give an update to my 2408 monitor.

I got around to purchasing a new DVI Cable and I get 1920x1200 resolution now.

Is the refresh rate 60Hz?

Yes, the refresh rate is 60hz.

I also have the monitor driver installed...although I believe the driver is more for color profiling than anything.

In the Catalyst Control Panel, under Digital Panel Properties is "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays" checked?

August 15th, 2008 05:00

I have tried this setting and it did nothing.

Here is something I just tried...

I am using the VGA input hooked up to the video card DVI output with an adapter running 1920x1200.

Everything is fine and looks good.

I also have DVI input hooked up to the video card secondary DVI output.

I switch the input on the monitor from VGA to DVI and the screen goes black displaying 'power save mode'.

Nothing shows on the monitor until I switch back to VGA input.

When I am back in VGA I change the resolution to 1024x768.

I can now go from VGA to DVI input.

Just saw your post on Guru3D:
"I tried a setting in Catalyst Control Panel that made the monitor black and I had to boot into safe mode and perform a system restore..."

Here's what I would try:

Uninstall Catalyst drivers.
Turn off PC and monitor.
Disconnect all video and power cables power from monitor. While disconnected, press and hold the monitor power button down for 3 seconds.
Reconnect monitor using one DVI only and reboot computer.
Re-install Catalyst drivers.
If you still can't get 1920x1200, try different combinations of "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays" and "Alternate DVI operational mode".
If you still can't get 1920x1200, switch off, connect to the other DVI ouput and retry.

It's not a good idea to connect VGA and DVI to the same computer, or hot swap video cables.

Another suggestion:
"On boot or restart, the monitor DVI is slow to respond to the video card giving you an Out of Sync or no video. Go into the BIOS- Setup and turn Fastboot to Off."

"I tried a setting in Catalyst Control Panel that made the monitor black and I had to boot into safe mode and perform a system restore..."

That setting was CCC/Digital Panel/Attributes/Enable GPU Scaling.  It caused the screen to go black after it booted into windows and and the drivers were loaded.  I was then unable to get back into the CCC to uncheck it.  Booting into Safe Mode I was unable to load CCC.  Deleting the drivers and CCC from Safe Mode and then reinstalling drivers did not help.  Hence the system restore.

Should that setting given me a black screen?

I'll give your suggested procedure a try tomorrow evening after I get off of work.  Does the holding of the monitor power for 3 seconds perform a kind of reset?

I'll also disable fastboot in BIOS, though I can boot fine into the nondesired resolutions without issue.

I guess so - ChrisM has suggested it:
It wouldn't hurt to reset the display in the OSD as well.

I don't have any fastboot option in my BIOS.  I was thinking of my brother's computer which I set up for him.

I did as prescribed.  Nothing has changed.  I cannot run 1920x1200 over DVI.

I am done jumping through hoops.  I'm going to have this monitor exchanged.

Incidentally, just before reinstalling the Catalyst drivers i tried some different resolutions running the Default Windows Drivers.  If anything all of these resolutions should work for almost any monitor that is plugged in right?

800x600 OK

1024x768 OK

1152x864 OK

1280x1024 OK

1400x1050 FAIL

1600x1200 FAIL

Sorry you had no luck. The Windows video drivers have limited resolution support.
