P2715Q and Surface Pro 3 @ 60Hz

Hi there,

I previously owned a Dell P2414Q which worked perfectly on my Surface Pro 3 @ 60Hz in 4K resolution. If I enabled the DP 1.2 option in the Dell it combined (somehow) two (virtual) displays as one which results in a 4K display at 60Hz. Normally this is not possible with the Surface Pro 3 but this "trick" worked flawlessly. I think it combines two 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz to ONE 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz screen?

Consists the P2414Q of two half-panels and the P2715Q of one maybe?

Because I like a bigger screen I bought the P2715Q but this brakes the 60 Hz 'support'. The DP 1.2 is by default on but the option to merge displays is missing. I am now missing the 60Hz which is very annoying to say the least. Why cant the P2715Q function like the P2414Q? I tried all different settings but the result is that I am just seeing 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz and not 60 Hz like the older P2414Q.

Please help!

I purchased this monitor to use with my Surface Pro 3 as well.  I was disappointed that it did not work at native resolution @60Hz.  There is a work-around though if you're willing to install Intel reference graphics drivers and create a custom resolution.

I'm using these settings in the Intel Custom Resolution dialog (driver version 10.18.10.3960):

Resolution: 3840 x 2160

Refresh Rate: 50 Hz (this is the best we can do with the SP3's DP output, any higher maxes out the available bandwidth over the SP3's DP chipset)

Timing Standard: CVT-RB (this is important, the other timing methods wont work at this resolution/Hz)

Overall, this is working very well for me.  50Hz is much better than 30Hz in terms of responsiveness.  Maybe in the future we'll get an official graphics driver update that handles 4K @ 60Hz without custom resolutions.

You may have to perform steps 6-11 after making a custom resolution.

A custom resolution is required to make this monitor work at 4k.

  1. Right-click on the desktop -> Graphics Properties (Intel)
  2. Display
  3. Click on "Display" by the back arrow and select "Custom Resolutions"
  4. Select Display : DELL P2715Q
  5. If the "Custom Resolutions List" is empty, add the following resolution:
  1. 3840 x 2160, 32 Bit, 50p Hz, Timing Standard CVT-RB
  • Go to the normal Windows Screen Resolution dialog (Right Click on Desktop -> Screen resolution)
  • Select the Dell monitor
  • Click "Advanced settings"
  • Go to the "Monitor Tab"
  • Uncheck "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"
  • You should now be able to select the 50Hz 4k resolution and apply it.  Windows will remember these settings, so you shouldn't have to do this again.

Hey there!

I am planning on getting a surface 3 and a new external display for work. I was thinking of getting the 2715 dell. The scaling issues windows 8.1 has with seperate displays seem to be optimal having both displays set at 150% scaling. Now i found out that the surface 3 only does official 30hz which is not what i would want,

How is the 50hz mode that you could get running? Is it usable? what are the disadvantages? The other option would be to go with the 24" display and MST Collage mode.

Thank you for your answer!

Thanks for the info!

I have a Surface 3 Pro and a Dell P2715Q.  I've installed the Intel driver ver. 10.10.10.3496 but I'm having trouble finding the Custom Resolutions Dialog.  All I can find are the standard Win 8.1 dialogs.  What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

A little bit involved to get this setup coming from stock surface drivers.  It would appear that MSFT is waaaayyyy behind in display driver world from intel. Not sure if this is the best way.. but here is what I did to get that dialog.

Follow steps 3, 4, and 5 from this link.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProdId=3721

Then I opened up the folder that contains the downloaded drivers (from the link above) and ran the .exe driver installer

Next to find the "custom resolution dialog" you navigate in file explorer to:

C:\Windows\System32 and run CustomModeApp.exe

This is where I believe he is adding the custom resolution, however when I create the custom resolution and try to apply it in the graphics control panel, it seems to revert back to 30hz.  Wonder if other people see this as well.

Just acquired this monitor to use with my SP3. I was successfully able to get the 50hz custom resolution working with the latest Intel drivers, but I am seeing a couple of problems with this work-around:

1. The display must to be set to MST-Secondary in order for the native resolution to be achieved. If left in its default state, it only runs at 2.5K

2. When 50hz custom refresh rate is enabled, I am seeing severe banding appear on certain gradients, as if the monitor's color depth is being reduced.

Since others are not reporting these issues, I am thinking that it may be my cable. I have ordered a new DisplayPort 1.2 cable to see if that addresses it. I would love to hear from those who have this working and who are NOT seeing this, however.

  1. MST should be "Off".  If it's on, it cuts the bandwidth in half.
  2. I have noticed no banding issues with gradients (and I'm pretty picky about these things).  Re-read the instructions I posted a few posts up and try applying the settings again.

Definitely try a new cable.  I hope you get everything running smoothly, this is a great monitor to use with the Surface Pro 3!

Thanks Ryan.

So I did switch cables but it made no difference: 2.5K max detectable resolution with MST off.

Interestingly, however, I *was* able to set up the correct custom resolution with the monitor in this mode, and in fact that did work: I'm now getting 50hz at native resolution, and no banding. :-)

I hadn't tried this at first because the fact that the Surface was not detecting the native panel resolution confused the issue.

Overall, I am really impressed with this panel, which is a great buy at this price point. Thank you Dell!

I can confirm that I can get 3840px2160px50Hz with MST set to Off, Primary or Secondary.

If I daisy chain 2 displays, then I can get 3840px2160px50Hz and 3840px2160px40Hz with MST set to anything EXCEPT off

Of course, these all require custom resolutions via the Intel settings

Hi, I have a surface pro 3 i5 with the 256 G harddrive.

I did the installation as you stated however when I try and customize the resolution above to get 50 Hz using CustomModeApp.exe no matter what I place in the Boxes highlighted in yellow the Resulting Resolution does not change. It just shows 0 x 0, 32 Bit, 0 Hz.

I have the miniDP to DP plugged directly into my  P2715Q and using the intel driver 10.18.14.4264. I have tried other drivers as well.

Any ideas why my values do not change? Is a docking station required for 50HZ?

Thanks.

This was written to help others in the same situation:

Confirming in 2021 using Surface Pro 3 or Surface Dock that they both can get a 3840 x 2160 x 50Hz using DisplayPort and Win10 with Intel's driver.

Win10 version:

Win10 Pro version 20H2 build 19042.867

Intel driver:

Driver Version: 20.19.15.5171
Build Date: Nov 4, 2020

The monitor was set to MST off but maybe that does not matter since I only had one P2715Q monitor connected.

Even disabling HDMI 1.4 mode on the P2715Q I could not get any mini-DP to HDMI adapters to work. I tried 3 different active adapters and the most I got was 3840 x 2160 x 30Hz. All adapters work connected directly to the Surface Pro 3. But only 1 adapter worked connected to the Surface Dock that was the SecurOMax.

30Hz isn't bad but 50Hz is better with a simple mini-DP to DP cable (Warkky brand but I don't believe it matters).

All the best.
