Recommendations for 19" flat screen monitor

I'm in the market to buy a 19" flat screen monitor.  What monitor/s do you like & why?  If you can give me a price range for your monitor that'd help.

Well the old 1900FP from Dell is a nice one, manufactured by Samsung.  Also the 191T with Samsungs name on it.

The new 1901  Dell is made by someone else I believe, not sure how good it is.

I recently purchased the Dell 1901FP for $550 shipped.  It is very nice and works fine for gaming.  The ultrasharp screen is beautiful, and the 4 USB 2.0 ports are a bonus.  It adjusts up and down, and rotates from portrait to landscape very easily.  Highly recommended ...

I second that recommendation from a_kneel. For all the same reasons. If you watch for the discounts each week on either the Home or Small Biz site you should be able to get it for well south of $600.  I got mine for $565 on the small biz site.

the 1901fp is now listed on both Home & Sm Business sites at $649.  A bit pricey, no?

No, the old price of $749.00 was expensive! $699.00 looked better , $649.00 is even better yet. However there is no need to rush, check on the weekends, you will find usually 10% off, sometimes 15% on the Small Biz site, or check for S and P coupon deals on the web, they pop up about every 2 weeks or so.  Do a google search for 'Dell Coupons'. Have fun.

Go to Dell4Me.com/beyond09 -  Dell has marked this monitor down from $649 to $584.10 until the end of September.  I just bought one, and I am praying it does not have any defects.

Thanks to all in this thread especially for the suggestion to check google for dell coupons.  I managed to get $99 in coupon discounts plus free shipping & it was mine for the golden price of $550!  Looking forward to moving onward & upward fr. crt to lcd!

Now, I just hope you have a DVI connection on your video card so you can run it direct digital. Analog is OK but uses more memory and may not be as sharp as it could be. Also, If you don't have an Nvidia card or a later ATI Radeon (so you can have Pivot or Rotate as part of your driver) you can obtain a free trial copy of Portrait Pivot Pro software here, and if you like it, spend that extra $40.00 you saved on it!.

I have Win XP & a recent Dell Dimension (4500) system.  But I don't know if I have those specific programs.  can you explain a bit more why ea. of them (except the first suggestion about digital, which I understood clearly) are important (& where I should check to see if they're on my PC).  I don't understand why rotation or pivoting is important (though I'm sure it is).

in real usage.. do people actually take the time to turn it or leave it portrait all the time and just change it back for gaming?

The 1901FP pedestal  and support has a screen rotation feature allowing you to view in either the normal landscape mode, or in portrait mode.  In order to view in anything other then landscape you have to have software which also rotates the display. Dell has a packaged ATI driver with rotation feature for this on the Radeon 9800, and Nvidia includes the feature in all of it's XP/2000 4x.xx and above, called NVRotate. Here is a good Nvidia link explaining these features..  If you have an earlier card, or Win98 you will have to get separate software, I referenced you to the Portrait Pivot Pro, which is a leading display software, which you can trial for free.

When you consider, if what they say is correct, more then 80% of web pages are actually in the portrait mode, it would seem to make sense to use it more. I have used it and do like it, except that the redraw is kind of clunky/slower then landscape, and scrolling produces a wavy efffect on text lines. I am using the Dell packaged ATI 9800 Rotate driver, and it is super in landscape, but again, just OK in portrait. I am considering downloading and installing the trial version of the Portrait Pivot Pro to see whether it has the same characteristics or not.
