S2417DG, versus U2312HM, contrast ratio terrible?

Hello everybody. I'm currently using three Dell monitors side to side, the middle one is a S2417DG that I use for gaming, work, and occasional movies. Off to the sides, I use two U2312HM for productivity. Those have amazing, vibrant IPS panels despite their old age. The blacks are good enough, too, for monitors that age.

I have a problem with the S2417DG though, and while it's silly to compare TN and IPS panels, I'm extremely disappointed with the blacks on this "gaming" monitor.

This is a photo of the S2417DG

This is the same image but on the U2312HM (exact same moment, I just moved the video player from one monitor to the other)

I don't know if there's any way to tweak the settings to help fix that, but dark scenes are absolutely littered with these horrible grey patches as the monitor struggles to display those darker shades.

As it is, I'm rather disappointed with this monitor and I'm looking for a solution. I used to have a 1080p 144hz monitor from a competitor, a monitor released in January of 2013, and although the colors don't compare favorably with the Dell IPS panels, the shades of grey were seamless enough and I could watch horror movies (or anything with a lot of dark colors) on it or anything I wanted. But I definitely can't with this monitor.

Is this normal? Fixable in settings? Or is it some sort of defect?

So you are comparing the U2312HM eIPS panel running at 1920x1080 60Hz to the S2417DG TN panel running at 2560x1440 60Hz/85Hz/100Hz/120Hz/144Hz/150Hz/155Hz/160Hz/165Hz ?

We need more information before we can start to troubleshoot...

* PC model
* PC video card (It must be an Nvidia video card to use G-SYNC and Overclock)
* PC video card ports
* PC operating system
* How is the S2417DG connecting to the PC video card using which ports and cable?
* Have you reset the S2417DG to Factory Settings, page 34, then retested?
* At what resolution and Hz are you testing the S2417DG?
* Have you backed the S2417DG down to 1920x1080 60Hz and then compared the video?

PC: MSI Z270-A Pro with i7-7700k

GPU: EVGA 1080ti, all three monitors are plugged by Displayport to this card, including the S2417DG

OS: Windows 10 64bit Pro

I recognize that comparing an IPS panel running at 165hz to a TN panel running at 60hz is not fair but I could also compare to another TN panel and the blacks would not be so bad.

Since your post, I have tried to revert to factory settings, and I have also tried factory settings with the native specs of 1440p/144hz, I've also tried to scale down to 1080p/60hz, and I've also tried 1440p/165hz. No matter what settings I use, blacks are always very "blocky" and look weird.

OP's solution works, it's inconvenient to have to do with every reboot but it will have to do. Thanks!

This is only a partial solution. It fixes the banding issue, but then all of your blacks get washed out and become grey, unless of course there is a solution to getting the blacks to actually be black after the dynamic range fix
