Trouble projecting laptop with HDMI output to 23-in P2314H monitor with DisplayPort/DVI input

Hello, I have an HP laptop that I'm trying to project to a 23" P2314H monitor and I'm having issues getting it to work. My laptop only has HDMI output and after reading around online, my understanding is that I won't be able to use the DisplayPort input on the monitor (even with an adapter) but should be able to use the DVI input instead. Before I purchase an HDMI to DVI cable, will this solution work? Sounds like it will allow video to transfer, but sound will not? Is there a workaround to this, or am I out of luck with this set up? I do have another monitor but was hoping to use this one if I can somehow get it to work. Any insight into how to transfer for video and sound is appreciated.
