U2412M USB Ports
I also have the U2412M monitor...I connect to my MacBook Pro using the DVI cable connected to the Apple Thunderbolt slot. Is there some functionality of the USB cable in this case, or is it unnecessary?

In theory, you would connect the monitor USB upstream cable to a USB port on the apple computer. Then the apple OS might "see" the monitor USB downstream ports giving you access to use them. But we do not know if the apple OS acts like Windows OS.
