U2412M, USB hub not recognized by Windows 7?

Monitor: U2412M

Laptop: Dell Vostro 3700

O/S: Windows 7 Ultimate

When I connect the USB lead supplied with the monitor to the laptop, Windows does not properly recognize the device. Device Manager shows it as an "Unknown device" beneath "Other Devices" and not beneath "Universal Serial Bus controllers". The Unknown device's properties say "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)". The "Details" tab shows:

USB\VID_0424&PID_2514&REV_0;;3
USB\VID_0424&PID_2514

If I select "Scan for hardware changes" or otherwise attmept to update the drivers I get this;

I have tried Chris M's USB reset instructions and have also tried a different USB cable, with no success. So I am consulting with my device manufacturer :-) There seem to be a few reports around of this happening with Dell monitors but no clear solutions.

Looks like my attempt to paste a bitmap of the error dialog failed! Let's try again:

Come on people, surely Dell must be able to provide the driver for USB\VID_0424&PID_2514 ?

* No. All we provide are the specific monitor inf/icm/cat files. You should check the Intel website and see if they have a newer driver for the Intel HM57 chipset. Ours was released on March 16, 2010. Or just run their Intel Driver Update Utility.

Thanks for the reply. I ran the Intel Driver Update Utility and it showed a newer version of the "Intel Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility - EXE only)" so I installed it. It makes no difference, which doesn't surprise me because the missing driver is surely for the chipset in the monitor, not the motherboard chipset?

At the weekend I tried a different monitor, a Dell U2411M, and this works fine. This also points to it being related to the chip used in the U2412M (which seems to be different to the U2411M, at least the VID and PID are not the same?). Unfortunately I don't have another U2412M to try.

Sorry, the other monitor that works is a U2311H, not a U2411M which probably doesn't exist!

Is there another computer to test the U2412M on?

Yes, I just tried it on a slightly newer Vostro (a 3550, mine's a 3700) and it works! It identifies a Generic USB hub and installs the driver.

Vostro 3700
March 2010
Intel HM57 chipset
USB 2.0

Vostro 3550
March 2011
Intel HM67 chipset
USB 3.0

Based on your testing, the older Intel HM57 chipset is not functional with the U2412M? The U2412M has USB 2.0 so that cannot be the issue.

True, although even if the U2412M had USB3 I would hope it would still support USB2, My testing also shows that my 3700 works with the U2311H monitor - what is the difference in the USB hub hardware between the U2311H and the U2412M?

No clue. We do not get that detailed specifications data of the internal components.

Chris,

I have the same problem with my new Dell U2412M monitor with non-working USB on a Windows 7 64bit desktop. What is the issue here? I find numerous accounts of this issue on the web without solution.

Sincersly,

John

Unknown. My guess is the USB drivers installed by the operating system are not current. Be sure to install the latest chipset drivers for your hardware. Then test the USB upstream cable on EVERY USB port on the computer.

Chris, this doesn't really hold water. In my case I have a Dell PC connected to a Dell monitor so any drivers needed to support the combination should be available from Dell. After all, Dell tells me I shouldn't try to update a driver from the chip manufacturer's website since only the (usually older) versions of drivers provided by Dell themselves are guaranteed to work.

What type of PC have you got, John?

jonnieboy,

The only monitor "driver" we provide for the monitor are INF/ICM/CAT files (DELL_U2412M-MONITOR_A00-00_DRVR_HF7W5.EXE)

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

We do not provide a USB Hub driver on our Monitor File Library. The USB Hub driver must come from the operating system. So the user should first check our File Library for their system model for the date of our chipset driver. Then, look for a newer chipset driver for that system model.
