Does the U2414H BID (Built-In Diagnostic), page 56, fill the screen? If yes, then the monitor itself is fine. Be sure to verify in the monitor OSD (On Screen Display) -Display that the Aspect Ratio is Wide 16:9. IF both of those are correct,  then the culprit is the computer video card, video card driver, or a setting in the operating system.

I have performed all steps for the BID, went through all the colors. There are no pixel imperfections, but the screen is filled precisely the same way, with the black borders around the screen. Please advise!

Get it exchanged. Perhaps another U2414H owner can post their findings.

It seems the Dell U24XX and U25XX series have a native aspect ratio of 16:9, whereas many (laptop) video cards & monitors have 16:10.

Just try a custom resolution of  2304x1440 or a fraction thereof (e.g. 1602x720) from within your computer's operating system to compensate for the difference.

This should fill all the pixels on your Dell monitor if I'm not mistaken.

Not to be used to watch movies though, probably... Unless you want horizontally stretched pictures.

Or maybe it will letterbox vertically in that case?

Aww, shucks! I am mistaken and this is getting pretty darn confusing: it seems Dell has both a 24XX and 25XX H-range and M-range.

While the M-range has an aspect ratio of 16:10, the H-range has an aspect ratio of 16:9!

So check your model's suffix to choose the right resolution and get rid of letterboxing!

as long as you didn't specifically want the 16:10 aspect ratio of the U2412M model

Every monitor User's Guide has a listing of which aspect ratio they utilize. For example, the U2515H uses 2560x1440 60Hz, Wide 16:9. So if the OSD (On Screen Display) list the correct aspect ratio Wide 16:9, Resolution 2560x1440 60Hz, and Maximum Resolution 2560x1440 60Hz, the monitor is setup correctly. Which is why we ask users to set the monitor to Factory Defaults and then run the Self-Test and BID (Built-In Diagnostic). If the failure is seen on those test, we would simply exchange the monitor if inside the 3 year warranty period.

Many thanks Chris,

I think I have rescued your service department from a recall for 2 Dutch customers today, thanks to your mails. Good effort!
Posted the lot on MacFreak.nl for all to see.
My effort was teaching them to switch to DisplayPort 1.1 for older Macs with these monitors.
Colourspace may still be an issue, but we'll see.
Yours truly,
Dellhex
