U2518D, HDR setup

Just had my monitor replaced by Dell with a newer model U2518D.

Read through the FAQ Dell HDR in the forum but still a bit confused about HDR.

Just received it so haven't had time to set it up. Before I do just need to clarify a few things.

Playback HDR compliant content such as retail 4K UHD movies on PC. What cable should I use to connect the monitor to the PC. Will the supplied DP 1.2 be ok for displaying HDR content or will I heed to use HDMI 2.0? Provided. HDR is enabled in Windows 10. HDR enabled on monitor and a HDR capable player (DVDFab Player 5) is used. Along with HDR complient GTX 1070 video card.

FAQ mentions that HDR requires HDMI 2.0a and Displayport 1.4 Yet monitor specifications show it only has displayport 1.2

Correct, the U2518D DP and mDP in ports and cable are 1.2. You must use the U2518D HDMI 2.0 in port.

GTX 1070 HDMI out port --> High-Speed HDMI to HDMI cable --> U2518D HDMI in port

Re: U2518D, HDR setup

I've connected the U2518 Monitor to PC via High Speed HDMI 2.0 cable.

I have enabled HDR on the U2518D Monitor (Smart HDR on) and set Windows 10 Display setting HDR and WCG to ON.

When in Windows the screen keeps fading from Very bright and vibrant to Dark and washed then back to very bright and vibrant again. Every couple of minutes. Is there anything I can to do to fix this?

Under Windows 10 Advanced Display Settings it shows the following. Which are the graphics card defaults:

  • Active Signal Resolution: 2560x1440
  • Refresh rate (Hz): 59 Hz
  • Bit depth: 12-bit
  • Color format: RGB
  • Color space: High dynamic range (HDR)

Also running the latest Nvidia 399.24 drivers and have all the Windows 10 updates installed.

Re: U2518D, HDR setup

Non-HDR content like the Windows desktop, Windows backgrounds, Windows basic applications, will always look bad if HDR is turned On. Only dedicated HDR movies and HDR games will utilize/show the HDR. Which is why when you go back to the non-HDR Windows, you have to turn HDR Off.

So what HDR movies or HDR games are you testing?

Re: U2518D, HDR setup

The problem I am having with this new monitor is that the screen seems to be constantly auto dimming. Where the screen in HDR mode continually going dim then bright then back to dim every 2 minutes. I've checked the settings in windows for Adaptive Brightness and can't see any "Adjust my screen brightness automatically" settings.

Monitor is

  • Revision A05
  • Manufactured date: July 2018
  • Firmware: M2T103

Any ideas on this problem?

"Where the screen in HDR mode continually going dim then bright then back to dim every 2 minutes"

On the non-HDR windows desktop? Or when actually running an HDR move or HDR game?

When NOT actually running an HDR move or HDR game, HDR should be OFF.
