U2518D, Laptop, Windows 7, cannot select 1440p?

  • Current Monitor Model Name: Dell U2518D

  • Issue: Cannot pick 1440p resolution, showing up as Generic PnP in device monitor.

I just recently got a Dell U2518D and have connected it to my work laptop via HDMI. The maximum resolution available to me is 2048x1080, but I believe that my graphics card can support higher than that. I am running windows 7, 64 bit.

My work laptop has an AMD 6380G (old, yes), but I did some research and it looks like that card can support 1440p. I am also noticing that the device shows up in device manager as a Generic PnP, I'm not sure if that is causing the issue but I can't update it.

I have tried the following:

  • Update display drivers for the AMD 6380G.
  • Update Firmware on dell display.

My questions:

  • Am I limited because of the HDMI cable? The laptop does not have a displayport or mini-displayport.
  • Is there a way to get the monitor recognized as the actual monitor and not Generic PnP? I couldn't find drivers to install on the Dell website or Windows Update.

The U2518D is hardware capable of doing 2560x1440 60Hz. See the User's Guide pages 6, 11, 12. But, the PC and its GPU have to support that resolution. This U2518D driver supports = Windows 7/8/8.1/10. If installed and the operating system is functioning correct, the U2518D should appear in the Device Manager.
