U3014; problems getting full performance through HDMI

I just got my U3014 delivered, but am having a lot of problems getting it to run.

My initial test was with my MSI GT780DXR (nVidia GeForce GTX 570M) windows 7 64 system. The laptop only has VGA and HDMI 1.4 out, but HDMI should be able to do 2560x1600 @ 32 bit. But the nNvidia device driver keeps complaining that the U3014 can't do that. The highest I could get was 1920x1080. After some custom configuration in the nVidia settings, I've got it running on 2560x1600 @ 16 bit / 60 Hz. But on such a big screen 16 bits do not look great (to say the least).

So I connected it to my desktop system also W7 64 bit (nVidia GeForce GTX 560) and it immediately switched to 2560x1600 @ 32 bit (60 Hz). So I know it works (at looks great).

A third trial involve a HP laptop with Ubuntu and a DisplayPort. It too only got to 1920x1080.

I'm starting to suspect that the HDMI 1.4 implemented in the U3014 is not capable of doing 2560x1600 @ 32 bit / 60Hz, as the HDMI says it should.

I've used a standard HDMI cable. Then I entered the Nvidia tool and created a custom resolution (because the monitor does not list what it can do over HDMI). Not all settings work, but what does work is:
- 2560x1600, 16 bit, 60Hz
- 2560x1600, 32 bit, 24Hz
- 2560x1600, 32 bit, 36Hz MacBook Pro Retina

I'm not seeing any flicking @24Hz so I'm leaving it at that for now. According to the 1.3 specification, it should be able to do 24 or 30 bit at 60Hz, and 1.4 even more. But I can't configure that. I need to pick that up with Nvidia.

Below custom resolution works for me on

U3014 Rev A01 over HDMI & MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

2560x1600, 32 bit, 36Hz (37Hz and higher will not activate)

Ok. So I found that 24Hz works, Dmitry told me 36Hz works... Hm, that are steps of 12 Hz, so how about 48Hz? Well, it does! 2560x1600 32bit 48Hz. I'm pleased!

I have an Asus G73JW laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 M. It only has HDMI out, no DVI, no DisplayPort.

I managed to get my Dell U3014 to work with it at 2560x1600 @ 60Hz with 32 bit color with a cheap HDMI cable from Newegg (N82E16812576012).

I had to go into the Nvidia control panel and add it as a custom resolution *and* change the timing from the default of "Automatic". I used the "CVT Reduced Blank" timing (not knowing what any of the options meant) and that worked, so I never tried the others. Using the "Automatic" timing it would add the resolution, but that gave me a super-blurry fake 2560x1600 (was actually outputting that scaled down to 1920x1200 per the "Display Settings > Display Info" OSD menu). Once I changed the timing to "CVT Reduced Blank" it was perfectly sharp and the OSD menu confirms the correct resolution is being output to the screen.

Moral of the story? You may need to tweak more than the refresh rate to get it work, but if your card is capable of outputting the resolution, it *can* be done. It is not being artificially limited by the monitor itself.

Prior doing the below steps - Connect the USB cable from your monitor to your computer.

Suggest you to install the drivers for U3014 and try changing the resolution

U3014 Drivers: ftp.dell.com/.../DELL_U3014_MONITOR_A00_00_DRVR_XCW6T.exe

DDM App: ftp.dell.com/.../ddmsetup1260.exe

Ultrashap Calibration App: ftp.dell.com/.../Dell%20UltraSharp%20Color%20Calibration%20Solution%20Setup.exe

Use the Dell Display Manager application to change the screen resolution to your desired resolution.

Follow: ftp.dell.com/.../dell-u3014_User%27s%20Guide2_en-us.pdf

User Guide for your monitor for Ref: ftp.dell.com/.../dell-u3014_User%27s%20Guide4_en-us.pdf

Perform Factory reset using the Menu button -> Other settings -> Factory reset All settings

You can find the optimal resolution from the same page when you press the Menu button set the same resolution on your PC too.

Also check the cable version - If this is a HDMI 1.3 version cable - you need a HDMI 1.4 cable if you need to achieve that resolution.

Check the NVIDIA Optimus Control Center to enable to NVIDIA (Some systems have switchable graphics option). Disable onboard Intel and enable the NVIDIA only. Connect AC Adapter to the comp to enable Discrete graphics and disable Onboard automaticaly (This is the default setting for NVIDIA Optimus)

I've got only a nVidia GTX570M, there is no Intel controller present (in windows at least), but the laptop is on power.

I already had the U3014 device drivers installed (specifically for HDMI).

The DDM adds a lot of features, but nothing associated with resolution. It's more automatically mode switching and a window placement function.

The calibration app is only of use if you have a hardware calibrator (which does not come with the monitor).

I have a HDMI 1.4 cable.

I've found a way to connect my desktop via HDMI as well and it has the same problems. Seems the U3014 can't do 2560x1600 32bit 60Hz over HDMI.

Defined by Dell, HDMI is a video mode and not a graphics mode. Depending on the video card and its driver, the highest resolution HDMI can do is up to 2560x1600. We are not guaranteeing 2560x1600, just any resolution up to it based on the capabilities of the video card and its driver. To be sure of getting 2560x1600, the source video card port would have to be DVI-D or DP.

I agree that the wording in the manual is vague. Glad your video card and driver support that resolution.

Luckily my video card and driver support 2560x1600 through HDMI. Dell can't claim to be HDMI 1.4 compliant (see user guide) and then simply not implement the required specs. That would be misleading. HDMI 1.3 allows for some deviating color depth, but 1.4 does not, especially considering the U3014 is marketed as a premium color technology monitor. As it stands, there is absolutely no reason in the current information provided by Dell to suspect the monitor can't do its native resolution via HDMI with an color depth acceptable to be qualified as "premium" and frequency.

Indeed 2560x1600 32 bit 36 Hz works. Thanks! Seems to be a matter of discovering for Dell what their monitor can do.

Updated data from the displays team...

Some video cards now have HDMI 1.4 that will do higher resolutons.

AMD 6xxx did not support 1.4 (HD6990 has no HDMI native IO)

AMD 7xxx/8xxx do support 1.4, but (per the specification), not all the cards are listed to support 1920x1080
- HD7870, HD7950, HD8870, HD8950 all list 4096x2160 as the max resolution over HDMI
- HD7770, HD6950, HD6870 all list 1920x1080 as the max resolution over HDMI

Nvidia lists support for 1.4 back to the 5xx cards and for 6xx cards, except for GTX555
-GTX660, GTX670, GTX680 all list 4096x2160 as the max resolution over HDMI
- GTX590/GTX690 have no native HDMI IO
- I did not do GTX580, so I have no direct specification, but presume it does not support this high resolution
- All other GTX5xx cards only list 1920x1080 as the max resolution

To get back to the origin of the thread / problem: "All other GTX5xx cards only list 1920x1080 as the max resolution". When I first plugged in the monitor that was a big disappointment. I check before hand that I had HDMI on both sides, so I expected 2560 to be listed. It took me a week of trial and error to get to the 2560x1600 32bit 48Hz I'm running on now. This is not a good process for people buying such a pricy monitor and should be optimized. What could be the reason the cards list 1920 as the maximum resolution? It could be that the driver only requests / shows 32bit 60Hz resolutions from the monitor. At least newer cards do show the higher resolutions. But why in the world would it show 4096? That's too high for the U3014!

Confirmed!

The real moral of the story is IMHO; don't believe the manufacturer when he says "that won't work".

Unable to get the full resolution on HDMI @60 hz, 32 bit, no matter which setting I choose.. Using a Quadro K5000M on a Dell system. The DIsplayPort on this computer is right where I place my mouse... and the DisplayPort cable keeps getting in the way of mouse movement. Was hoping to go the HDMI way to avoid this problem.. Will a HDMI-to-DisplayPort converter do the job?
