U4021QW, MacBook Pro, incompatible?

I just got a U4021QW (firmware: M2T102) to use with a new MacBook Pro 16 (2021) running on Monterey 12.2.1. So far it looks like a no go combination. I might need to return the monitor unless I can overcome the following issues:

1. I can only connect the MacBook on the Thunderbolt port since the HDMI ports won't allow me to select the full resolution for this monitor: 5120 × 2160. This would be ok, except that I the Thunderbolt port is always charging the Mac during use, and this is something I would like to avoid.

2. DDM is basically unusable since it doesn't save my settings, so every time I reboot my custom layouts are gone and also the settings go back to default: "Application window Snap" goes back to ON ( I want it to be OFF because it's just annoying). Also, the "Hold down Shift to enable positioning" worked the first time I installed DDM and now it doesn't anymore. This feature too goes back to default (OFF) while I'd want it to be ON and working, obviously.

Has anyone had a similar experience. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro and Dell U4021QW compatibility:  full 5Kx2K. I just tested it on:

2020 MBP 16"
2019 MBP 15"
M1 MacBook Air & MBP 14" running the latest Monterey OS 12.6.1

Dell U4021QW firmware is the latest: M2T104

This@charliesaigon  tip was a huge help for me. Maybe I have too many Macs floating around -- I overlooked this aspect while switching between Macs and before reading this post I had given up on the older MBPs.

I only tested via USB-C/thunderbolt.

You should start researching a fix by reading through our U4021QW, MacBook Pro threads.

Then read through the Apple Forum U4021QW threads.

Upload the DDM diagnostic report.

And yes, I am running the latest DDM version (DDMv1.50.0.0042) and the monitor has the latest firmware (Ver. M2T104).

By the way, since I initially posted this question, there have been more than 20 private messages with Dell support - multiple people asking the same questions over and over and not providing any help whatsoever, despite my diligence in testing and documenting the problem/problems. All and all a very time consuming experience with no results and one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a product support. Here's the summary if you're interested. There are two problems: problem 1 is about connection of the monitor; problem 2 is about DDM on MacBooks.

PROBLEM 1: CONNECTING THE MONITOR WITH MACBOOK PRO M1 MAX

I don't understand your first point.  Why would you NOT want the laptop charging?  The laptop is smart enough to stop charging when the batteries are full. We actively purchased these specifically because they provide charging, and it is a single connection (the monitor is our dock).

Your laptop's HDMI port only supports 4K resolutions at 60Hz.  I suspect to get to the full resolution you would need to drop your refresh rate to 30Hz, and then you might get additional resolution options.  Overall, the resolution is a limitation of your laptop, not an issue with the monitor.

Hi thawk9455. On my 2018 MacBook Pro I actually killed the battery in a little over 2 years by keeping it plugged in to power all the time. The engineer at the Apple store who replaced the battery recommended not keeping it plugged to power all the time, even with the "Optimized battery charging" option enabled (which is not to be trusted - my battery goes always to 100% charge when plugged).

By the way, I never heard back from Dell after they escalated the problem to their product team. They must have given up on fixing DDM for Mac. I think the lesson here is not to trust Dell to work well with Apple.

Hi @Jason Esky
Thank you so much for the above post, Option-clicking on "Scaled"  revealed the native 5120 x 2160 resolution of my monitor and I can confirm it work perfectly on my MacBook Pro 15-inch 2018 with Radeon Pro 555X GPU

Many thanks!
Ioannis
