Use analog or digital cable for 1901FP? (newbie)

Hi,

I have a Dell 8300 with an NVidia GeForce FX 5200 card that is connected to a (Dell-branded) 19" Flat Panel display (1901FP).

This came with 2 cables: one with blue ends, which I think is analog, and one with white ends, which is DVI or something (digital, I assume). I have ports for both on both the card and the monitor.

Which one is best for a single-display setup? Why? The monitor was packed with the analog cable attached, yet a note elsewhere in Dell's knowledge base said that for its 15" FP display, digital is the way to go? Huh?!?

TIA

DaveStatman,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The digital has better quality. Here are the cable connections for this monitor that may help you out.

Attaching the Cables: Dell™ 1901FP Flat Panel Color Monitor User's Guide

Cable Connections On Back of Monitor and Computer

  1. Turn off your computer and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Connect either the white (digital DVI-D) or the blue (analog D-sub) display connector cable to the corresponding video port on the back of your computer. Do not use both cables on the same PC. The only case in which both cables can be used is if they are connected to two different PCs with appropriate video systems. (Graphics are for illustration only. System appearance may vary).
  3. Connect the upstream USB port (cable supplied) to an appropriate USB port on your computer .
  4. Connect USB peripherals to the downstream USB ports (rear or side) on the monitor. (See rear or bottomview for details.)
  5. Connect the power cable for your monitor to the power port on the back of the monitor.
  6. Plug the power cables for your computer and monitor into a nearby outlet.
  7. Turn on the monitor and computer.
If your monitor displays an image, installation is complete. If it does not display an image, see Troubleshooting.
  8. Use the cable holder on the monitor stand to neatly organize the cables.
Note: If your PC does not support the connection for the "digital DVI-D" video cable then it can remain unconnected or it can be removed from the back of the monitor. This will not affect the performance of the monitor.
Note: For USB peripherals already connected to your computer, changing the USB connection to your monitor is not necessary.

Jesse-

Thanks.  Connections were obvious (I like your having color-coded connectors and sockets).

I got different info from Dell's tech support; the fellow said there was no difference for a single monitor, and that one would use the two cables if one wanted to connect a TV (his words, honest!) to the computer.

Suggestion: Ship the monitor with the digital cable attached instead of the analog one to indicate Dell's suggested hookup;

and put in the instruction page (packed w/ monitor) the statement "Digital is better" or some such thing. And perhaps straighten out your techies.

Dave
