u2415 wont switch displays when using DDM

I have recently purchased 2 U2415 displays as I have a need to connect 2 different PC's to the same monitors.  I had hoped that these would auto switch between inputs but I have only found out after purchasing that this cannot be achieved without a firmware update and that the firmware is not user upgradeable!!

I cam across several posts that reference using DDM.exe to initialte a software switch but I am unable to get it to work with the u2415 monitors.  I can modify the brightness but not the input

these commands worked

ddm.exe /1:SetBrightnessLevel 50

ddm.exe /1:SetBrightnessLevel 85

these did not

ddm.exe /1:SetActiveInput DP

ddm.exe /1:SetActiveInput mDP

 I also tried other combinations for the input such as DisplayPort, mini DisplayPort, DVI (suggested in aonther post) , HDMI, HDMI1 to name a few.

I'm not 100% sure of the input types

You seem to be using a really old version of DDM (b1244 from 2012) - get the latest version (b1800) here. The commands you are using weren't supported by DDM in 2012, so the upgrade alone should fix your problem.

If for some reason you cannot upgrade, use these commands instead:

ddm.exe /SetControl 60 0F  // to switch to DP1

ddm.exe /SetControl 60 10  // to switch to DP2/mDP

ddm.exe /SetControl 60 11  // to switch to HDMI1

ddm.exe /SetControl 60 12  // to switch to HDMI2

I'm afraid there is no solution for that with a U2514. DDM only works over the active input on older Dell monitors; you can't switch the active input over an inactive input because there is no bidirectional communication link.

I believe the latest Dell monitors like the U2417 remove this limitation, but for older monitors like yours your best approach would be to use the hardware based "Shortcut Keys" in the U2514 OSD and assign "input source" to one of them.

Thanks Swamped.  This seems to have resolved the imediate issue but not my overall problem.

What I'm trying to achieve is that the wife and I have 2 different docking stations for different laptops.  We have dual screens and want to share the screen setup which is why we went with the Dell monitos as they wer the best/only 24 inch 16:10 with multiple digital inputs I could find.  

What I'm hoping to achieve is that when we dock the screens will or can be made to activate for the docked laptop by initiating a script automatically on docking to make the screens active.  eg If my wife users herlaptop and then goes to work and I dock my machine I dont want to toggle the OSD to make the screens work for me.    

I seem to be able to switch away from my computer when active but not back if the connection is not active?   If the wifes laptop is locked or she has gone how can I activiate the screens for my machine?

thanks so much for your help on this.  .  I have done more serching and I'm gobsmacked about the inability to switch the monitors other than through the soft keys for a monitor with 4 inputs! It is sooo frustrating to have awesome monitors with so little thought/bad desisions made in it's design. I have seen a reference that the firmware can be updated to auto switch to the active connection but that this can only be done in the factory.  Any idea if a firmware update is something that could be user managed?  Is it worth folowing this up with Dell do you think?
