EMC NetWorker 8.1 VBA/EBR VMWARE Backup Appliance ?
Hello,
One question regarding best practice in configuring networker 8.1 vmware backup appliance.
I have :
- · 1 VMWare VCENTER
- · With 30 clusters
- · Each cluster including 8 ESX servers.
- · Each cluster have 2 dedicated datastore not shared between clusters.
In this context I have 3 possible solutions:
- To install 1 appliance + 2 "proxy". Then few VM would be backed up with vmware hotadd (with direct datastore access hotadd) then the most part of the backup will go through LAN (NBD mode).
- To put one BAR appliance per cluster then limit appliances/proxys bar to local datastore. That's means in my case 8 BAR whith 2 proxy on each !
- To install a new ESX server having access to all datastore of all vmware clusters. Then install here 1 BAR with 2 proxy to backup the whole vmware datacenter.
Please share your opinion on this.
Regards !
Ruddy

Hello Ted,
I would prefer configuration 3 but :
- Be careful with Datacenters (VMware point of view), you can't cross them with hotadd feature...
How many VM do you have ?
No network security ?

Hi F@b,
thanks for your answer,
There is almost 1500 VM to backup.
No spécial network secutity regarding VM management, only FC SAN shadowing per cluster..
I am able to add an esx server with with full zoning and shadowing access, this way it can hotadd all VM in the VMWARE datacenter !

Hello,
It seems to be a good solution to add a "special" ESX to do the job.
Let us know what solution you will use and how things go.
