File level recovery in NetWorker 8.1 and EBR Appliance - Recommended network settings?
Hello,
Im using NetWorker 8.1 in a vSphere 5.5 lab environment to gain knowledge about new functions in 8.1 and vSphere 5.5, with focus on Backup & Recovery of VMs.
In our production environement, our vcenter server, physical hosts, san etc are all on seperate network from the VMs, as normal best practise (i.e redundant management network, redundant SAN network etc). Im trying to replicate this as much as possible in my lab.
My vcenter/esxi management network and SAN network is all sharing the same subnet, 10.1.36.0/24 for simplification, my VMs are on a public network (WAN).
I have deployed my EMC EBR Appliance to reside on the management network, 10.1.36.200. I got it to register with vCenter and full image backups are working great.
What Im trying to figure out is how to perform av file level recovery - I quote from the VMWare Integration Guide for Networker 8.1:
"Restoring specific folders or files to the original VM" (page 67)
1. Open a browser and enter a URL that points to the EMC Backup and Recovery appliance and indicates file-level restore, as in the following example:
http://EMC_Backup_and_Recovery_appliance_host:8580/flr
Note: The browser must point to a EMC Backup and Recovery appliance from the VM that is being restored using FLR. You must have the necessary permissions to perform FLR restore.
To me this really does not make much sense - According to this, my VM (perhaps belonging to a customer on an isolated network) must have connectivity to the internal network where the EBR appliance resides?
Also, in our production environment we have alot of VMs that is isolated on internal-only networks, with no route to the public internet, or other public networks.
Is this the only way to perform FLR ? What are your takes on this?
Also - How many Linux VM servers has a X installation with a flashplugin-browser installed ? Atleast not in our environment...

Sure, the file level restore procedure involves logging into the target server that you want to restore files too, this is typically a Windows or Linux server, and launching a browser to the EBR appliance. The EBR webpage requires Adobe Flash to run and most servers don't have this installed (at least the ones I come across).

I would like to echo some of these concerns as well. I've implemented the EBR appliance for a few clients now and generally run into the following issues with file-level recovery:
1. network connectivity required from target restore server to EBR. I come across servers in DMZ, multi-tenant environments, etc where this connectivity does not exist.
2. Flash software requirement on target server. Most organization are hesitant to install Flash on production systems on Windows servers, and this isn't really an option with Linux.
3. smaller issue - if Internet Explorer Enhanced Security is enabled the webpage refuses to load. This can be worked around by adding the EBR address to Trusted Sites, but in many organizations this is controlled by GPO's that need to be modified.
Having said that, I want to also say the image-level backup/restore of VM's is fantastic with the EBR appliance. Backups complete fast, and the incremental Forever schedule is easy to understand and manage.
