Forgot Passphrase required for Data Restoration in Networker

Hi,

Need help on a Networker Restoration Issue. A backup was taken 7 years back on physical tape using Networker 7.6 which was encrypted with a passphrase. Few years later, Networker was upgraded to 8.2 (which is the current version) and migrated to another machine. The passphrase was also removed post migration. As time passed, forgot the passphrase that was used to take the backup.

Now, a restoration request has come for the data that was backed up around 7 years back which we are unable to do as the passphrase required during restore is not available. Is there a procedure with which the passphrase can be recovered or restoration of data can be done.

If you have forgotten the passphrase for the backups taken by NetWorker long back, your only option is to try by choosing different passphrases, you cannot restore the bootstrap backups and get back the passphrase.

What you need to do is to recover the NetWorker bootstrap and lockbox from 7 years ago.  The lockbox is where the passphrase would have been stored. The passphrase is not stored in clear text.  The date of these backups should be right after the backup date of that data you want to recover.

To prevent the current production NetWorker environment from being affected by any changes, you should perform a NetWorker disaster recovery procedure on a test system.

I successfully tested the following on my linux test system...  Please try the following:

- At the time that the data was backed up 7 years ago, determine what was the NetWorker server name and what operating system.  Use this information to set up a host with this same name, and same or similar O/S version, and even i.p. address if possible.

- Install NetWorker... hopefully in the same path that it was 7 years ago.

- locate a NetWorker bootstrap that was backed up at the same time as the data or afterwards...  at a time when the passphrase would have been as the data that was backed up.

- configure a NetWorker device that is compatible and capable of loading and reading the media that the bootstrap is stored on.

- As per disaster recover process, recover the bootstrap.  The media database will be overridden with the one recovered from the bootstrap.  If the current res location is the same as the res from the bootstrap, then the recovered res will be stored in /nsr/res.R.  If not, then res will be saved on the directory path that it was during the bootstrap backup.  Either way, once mmrecov completes, stop NetWorker, rename the current res, and put the recovered res in its place.

- restart networker

- recover the server's index with:  nsrck -L7 -t (date) (server name)

- next you will need to recover the NetWorker lockbox  ( /nsr/lockbox or nsr\lockbox ).  Recover this to a temporary folder.

- stop NetWorker

- rename the current lockbox, and move the recovered lockbox in its place

- restart networker

- check the server properties.  The datazone passphrase should be what it was at the time the lockbox directory was backed up 7 years ago

- Now try recovering the data

Good luck...
