Legato backup of a cluster shared volume

Question

Hi, I have a Legato Networker 7.4.4 server and Legato Networker 7.5 - SP3 running on a Legato client with Windows 2008-R2 Hyper-V. I want to backup the ClusterSharedVolume being in C:\ClusterStorage\Volumex\server1 of the Hyper-V machine which is physically on a SAN (over iSCSI). I get the message my version (client or server ?) does not support the backup of CSVs. Which versions do i need on both sides to be able to do it ? Rgds, Johan

Johans,

Please clarify a couple things for me:

The cluster server that your are attempting to back up the shared drive of is NOT the NetWorker server, but is standard client. Is that correct?

Also, in a typical cluster installation there is a cluster "Virtual Server Name" and the physical server names. Which name are you attempting to backup the shared drive through? The virtual server name or the physical server names.

Hi Mark,

I have a physical server with Legato 7.4.4 Server running Windows2003.

As Legato clients, I have (among others) virtual machines running Windows 2008-R2 and Red Hat Linux 5.4.

Those virtual machines all have a corresponding .VHD which live in C:\ClusterStorage\Volumex as can be found on the physical host server also running Windows 2008-R2. I have several virtual machines that I want to backup per physical host server. All those physical host servers take part in a failover cluster.

Physically, that CSV is stored on a HP SAN storage by iSCSI.

Because I cannot make live-backups of the VM's running on those host servers, I want to make already a backup of the CSV on the physical servers. I know the image will be inconsistent but I heard that you can boot from it. So, in this way i would have a backup of the VHD corresponding to the VM's.

Does this give a more clear picture of the situation ?

I believe recently while reading 7.6SP1 release notes (I guess applies to 7.5SP3) I read that client now says CSV is not supported for backup and excluded those volumes. This means no version of NSR at the moment supports it.

Actually, I just checked it again and it states:

"Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) is a new failover clustering feature in Windows

Server 2008 R2 that allows all nodes in a cluster concurrent access to data on every

CSV-enabled shared disk. CSV simplifies the configuration and management of

clustered virtual machines. With CSV, multiple clustered virtual machines can use

the same LUN (disk) while still being able to fail over independently.

Note: The NetWorker client on Windows Server 2008 R2 will not support CSV. If Networker

detects configured CSV, it does not back up the CSV, and displays the following message:

ALERT: This release of NetWorker does not support the backup of Cluster Shared

Volumes.The save_set_path directory and its contents will not be saved.

Networker continues to backup the remaining files and directories"

As to plans when this will be supported, perhaps someone from EMC can shred some light. My guess would be 7.6SP3 which should also address win2k8[R2] backups finally.
