NetWorker 7.6 SP 2 VADP with vSphere 5?

Hello,

I am in the vSphere 5 beta program and I installed NetWorker 7.6 SP 2 trial on my vLab to make some proof of concept testing. I am having problems with image backup of Windows 2008 R2 VM using VADP.

My setup is a NetWorker 7.6 SP 2 on a Windows 2008 R2 VM and one Storage Node VM which is also acting as VADP Proxy. vCenter Server auto discovery is working fine and I see that NetWorker is creating a snapshot of VM but it deletes the snapshot almost immediately and nothing gets copied. Windows VM has a EFI virtual firmware and GPT partition scheme.

Client backup config is as follows

- Identity name is set to hostname of VM (it is in DNS and resolvable by FQDN and with short name)

- Virtual client is enabled

- Physical hostname is FQDN of ESX host and resolvable

- Save Set is "*FULL*"

- VADP_HYPERVISOR is set to FQDN of vCenter Server

- VADP_VM_NAME is set to VM name as seen in the vCenter Server inventory

- Proxy Backup is set to my Storage Node which is configured as VADP Proxy

- Storage Nodes is set to FQDN of my Storage Node
- Recover storage nodes is set to FQDN of my Storage Node

And thats about it. I can run NetWorker Client based backups on a Windows hosts so my NetWorker installation is working at least on some level.

Saveset message of failed image backup is as follows

savegrp: suppressed 53 lines of output.
Disk 3 Size          : 20,0 GB
Disk 3 Datastore name     : vmfs5_02
Total Number of Disks     : 3
Obtained the virtual disks for the VM.
Change block tracking is disabled for VM: IOmeter
File level Recovery from Image level backup is enabled.
MORef for the VM is obtained.
Obtained the virtual disks for the VM.
Using 'hotadd' as the transport mode for Hard disk 1.
80432:nsrvadp_save: Parser failed because of a non-NTFS volume inside the VM.
Backup of the non-NTFS volume Success.
Cleaningup VADP mount operation.
Deleting snapshot for 'snapshot-542' ...
Task is -1% complete
Task is -1% complete
Snapshot for VM IOmeter is deleted.
Temporary directory 'd:\mnt\IOmeter' for VADP deleted.

Do I have error in my config or is NetWorker 7.6 SP 2 VADP incompatible with vSphere 5?

I installed VADP proxy on ESXi 4.1 host and tried to backup a VM on that host but still having problems .. I also disabled FLR just in case.

savegrp: suppressed 49 lines of output.

Disk 1 Datastore name     : vmfs3_02
Total Number of Disks     : 1
Obtained the virtual disks for the VM.
Change block tracking is disabled for VM: LinuxVM.v-reality.local
File level Recovery from Image level backup is disabled.
Backup of the non-NTFS volume Success.
Cleaningup VADP mount operation.
Deleting snapshot for 'snapshot-566' ...

Task is 95% complete
Task is -1% complete
Snapshot for VM LinuxVM.v-reality.local is deleted.
Temporary directory 'd:\mnt\LinuxVM.v-reality.local' for VADP deleted.

vCenter Server is still 5.0 RC version, if it does matter.

For the first test - since GPT disks are not supported for file level recovery (you had turned on), so this results in a fall back to Image level mode.  (Just FYI on that - see release notes for details - page 109).  But it appears that you're finding that despite the log entry "Backup of the non-NTFS volume Success", there is no data (no image) being saved off to backup media?

Yep, I suspected as much about GPT, and it is fine. I did install some test VMs with standard BIOS and MBR disks but image backups are failing on those as well, nothing is stored to media. There must be something wrong with my NetWorker installation as I installed vCenter Server 4.1 U1 and one ESXi 4.1 U1 host and image backups are failing also on those.

I have to keep on reading documentation
