NetWorker Support for VStorage API for Data Protection (VADP) (7.6 SP2)

Hello all,

You probably have seen the following note from VMware:

http://app.connect.vmware.com/e/es.aspx?s=524&e=12893740&elq=d883bd8be6f24c22a54b447c7e55c245&OPENID=Browser

VCB will be removed from the next release of vSphere platform. VCB 1.5 general support ends 7/25/2010; extended support ends 7/25/2013 as per VMware’s support policy.

How does this announcement impact you as NetWorker customers:

·in your VMware environment, this announcement does not affect you. NetWorker will be qualified with the next vSphere release when it is available. According to VMware, the next vSphere release is targeted for end of May 2010.

··Questions to you as NetWorker users:

  • Are you planning to move to the next vSphere release soon?
  • Are you using proxy-based protection for you VMware environment today?
  • Anything else you would like to see in NetWorker for VMware environments....

Thanks!

Hi Allan.

When you talk about NMM 2.3. Do you mean that RA will be available this friday, or is it GA that is scheduled for this Friday?

It's valuable for us to know.

Thanks,

Johannes

I was hoping that GA on NMM 2.3 was this Friday.

So is NMM 2.3 going to be GA in Q1 2011 or not?

Hi Johannes,

NMM 2.3 will be available this Friday under RA.  Let me explain the "RA" term a little bit more.

In 2011, you will see EMC begin to use a new release process for new versions of NetWorker software.  Software will be released under Restricted Availability.  Restricted Availability (RA) releases are fully-tested and production-ready, however, software and documentation are made available through an alternate process that lets EMC track adoption to ensure the early roll out meets customer expectations.  EMC Powerlink will feature instructions for gaining access to these releases during RA.  After initial monitoring of progress and success in the marketplace, the software and documentation will be deemed Generally Available (GA) and moved in total to EMC Powerlink.

Hopefully we will see you on Friday!

Thanks,

Allan

It will be available to the public on Friday.  Are you having issue with the term "restricted"?

If so, all that really means is the binaries will be monitored/gated.  It is likely that in a few weeks, it would then move to "generally available" and be unmonitored for download- like you have been use to on Powerlink.  We ran a similar monitoring program for the Data Domain device type license (DD Boost) capability of NetWorker 7.6 SP1.  It worked very well to help us see how it was being used, and help customers appropriately as needed.  We have since expanded the concept to include other NetWorker releases.

As a partner, once you have accessed the software/documentation, you should feel free to use it with your NetWorker customers as you see appropriate.  We aren't asking you to register each customer.  If you wish to you can, but it is not necessary.

If there are any other questions- please keep them coming.  We want to make sure everything is answered.

Hello,

I have three technical questions:

1. Does anyone know if NW 7.6 SP2 supports using both VCB and VADP backups on the same backup proxy? I mean using them on the same server at the same time, maybe for different VMs and datastores. If yes, are there any known restrictions related to such a co-existence?

2. What is the proposed migration path from VCB-based backup to VADP-based backup for Networker?

3. Does Networker require to install VDDK separatly (and which version) to be able to use vStorage API for Data Protection?

Best regards,

S.

Hi S,

1. No. The proxy-type (VADP or VCB) is determined by the version of the NW client that is installed on that host. The 7.6.2 client does not support VCB, but you can use an older client with a 7.6.2 server to keep VCB backups running in your datazone if you can't cut over to VADP all at once.

2.  Again it's all about the proxies. You can set up some VADP proxies in the datazone and then just move clients over from your VCB proxies.

3. No. VDDK is packaged with the NetWorker software. Set up a proxy through the wizard in NMC and you are good to go. No need to install any additional packages.

Hope this helps.

Paul
