Networker Fast Start 7.6.1 with IBM TS3200

Hi

I have a backup server with Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Operating System and NW FastStart 7.6.1 installed on it. The tape library is IBM TS3200 with 2 LTO4 tape drives. The issue is when i try to mount a tape from NMC, the tape is taking very long time to load (approx 12-15 mins). But if i try to check in my library console, i can see that the tape has loaded very quickly. It takes lot of time to read and verify labels using NW.

Please suggest a solution for this.

Regards,

Pratik.

Hi  Pratik,

Try to change the Library Resource timers, to the following values:

Load Sleep: 60 Seconds

Unload Sleep: 60 Seconds

Eject Sleep: 60 Seconds

You can get the Library Resource Timers from NMC GUI, Click on View-->Diagnostic Mode. Then Check properties of VTL library and navigate to Timers tab.

Change those timers and keep monitoring how is the library tasks are performed.

Thanks,

Ahmed Bahaa

Hi Pratik,

Did you check daemon.raw to find any error or warning?

Is there any other operation not being refreshed correctly in NMC? Could be a problem with NMC and not really with the library or any related process.

Have you seen any warning/error in the monitoring tab of NMC?

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

Please find the attached daemon.raw file from the NW server.

Hi Pratik,

Obviously you have some problems with the jukebox or the configuration:

First of all I would recommend you to change the size of the jobsdb and the retention (in days) to let's say size 300.000 and retention 3 days, to avoid the purge of the DB in the middle of a backup job.

In the other hand I'm not sure if you have an unconfigured library matching that name IBM@14.1.1, but that could be the reason as well, some inconsistency in the RES DB or something misconfigured.

Please let me know what is that IBM@14.1.1 and if you are aware of any issue with it.

Also I would recommend to apply the changes in the timers as Ahmed posted earlier.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Pratik,

Those error messages are from 4 and 3 days ago, and refer to the jukebox itself, not to the devices:

4/19/2012 6:47:14 PM  pdcbkpsrv01 nsrmmgd Cannot find resource `NSR jukebox' named `IBM@14.1.1'..

Do you have any "unconfigured" device in the server? This could cause some issue when NetWorker tries to find the right SCSI path.

Do you have persistent binding in place?

I would say:

1.- Apply the timers recommended

2.- Check if there is any unconfigured devices and, if so please clean them as per following KB:

https://solutions.emc.com/emcsolutionview.asp?id=esg100197

3.- If the issue comes up again monitor the daemon.raw and try to find the error messages.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

The IBM@14.1.1 is my IBM TS3200 library. The library had issues with tape drives detection using inquire command, but that issue got resolved once we changed the CNA card. Now we are able to see the tape drives consistently using inquire command.

I would be reaching onsite tomorrow and will apply the changes suggested by Ahmed.

In the meantime, please suggest anything else could be done from the above inputs provided.

Regards,

Pratik.

Hi Pratik,

Did you manage to change the timers as suggested before ?

Also i checked the daemon.raw and find the same findings that Carlos reported them, seems that you have unconfigured devices, so if you have some, please clean them as suggested by Carlos.

Waiting your updates.

Thanks,

Ahmed Bahaa

Hi Pratik,

I don't think that is the issue.

Did you tune up the timers as suggested earlier?

Could you please attach the daemon.raw?

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos / Ahmed,

I have deleted the configured library and have re-configured all the devices. Now there are no unconfigured devices but still i am facing the same issue. Could this be because my CNA card on the server has a speed of 10Gbps while the Tape drive speed is 4Gbps ? Can this be because of port speed mismatch ?

Regards,

Pratik.

Few years ago, there was one user who reported the same issue either here or on listserv mailing list. The trick then was to enable one of jukebox properties in NSR jukebox resource.  While there are several ones there, it escapes me now which exactly it was which did a trick. You may wish to try to search it or play on your own to see what effects are there.

Now, this backup server is handling by me. Compatibility issue between CNA card and IBM tape drive4. We hsould use HBA card for IBM tape drives.
