Recover RMAN data to files?

Is there any way this can be done or if it was backed up must you restore it with RMAN?

Use restore instead of recover from RMAN. I don't know another way of getting a RMAN data, maybe from save set recovery...

No, RMAN data will come back through RMAN only. There is no other way to recover it.

Thanks for agreeing with me, that is what I thought but the DBA was sure I should have been able to recover the backups to a file... It turned out his restore was failing as he had been running the restore when we were doing some work on the storage node.
