Single mail recover
Hello all,
can you help me with a single mail recover question. I have an Exchange 2003 and Module for Exchange v4.1 and Networker v7.1. I can (from Networker user for Exchange or schedulled group backup) backup a single mail. But if I want to recover a single mail, I can not do it. I can select one mailbox or folder (ex. Inbox) from this mailbox, but I can not recover or see single mail from a folder. Is it possible to recover a single mail with Networker module for Exchange?
Regards,
Ojo

You don't need any other software, Networker and NWM for Exch can do this for you.
First you need to ensure that you are backing up mailboxes, rather than (or as well as) message stores.
In the client under Remote\Backup Command use nsrexchsv -G which will backup ALL your mailboxes. (You can still use the usual saveset definitions in the savesetblock of the client)
Check the NWMEXCH Admin guide for details on Command Syntax and Saveset Definition, Chapter 5 Covers the details)
When you recover, ensure you log on to the exchange serverbox as a user with Full Exchange Rights to view ALL mailboxes, and run the NWEXCH Use. Go to Recover, and you should see 2 itemson the left, Mialboxes is what you want. Drill down through Users, folders to individual exch items, mail, calendar items etc. Select and restore.
If you Exch Box is Large (1000's) of mailboxes, then beware of performance when backing up individual mailboxes, It can be a bit slow, and a bit taxing on the server. You'll have to test it out.
Good Luck

What I have understand, the smallest part to recover is a single mailbox. If you really need a single mail recover
I belive you need to use an other software..

I tested your advise and it works. You were correct. -G switch does the brick-level backup of mailboxes and then you can recover a single mail. (it also results in bigger indexes)
Thanks

During the granular backup (mail box level) did you experience CPU usage of the exchange server shooting?

We do not recommend doing Single Mailitem backups. It takes considerably longer. If you want to do single mail item recover try the "new" Exchange 2003 feature "Recovery Storage Group". You can ifnd a description of it in the Legato NME Admin Guide or have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/library/ue2k3rsg.mspx

I was testing on a small server (just a couple of mailboxes) and it was OK - nothing special noticed on a performance. I will try it next week in a bigger environment just for test and will post the results. But I won't use it (I think that recover of a folder from a mailbox is enough...).

I tested a bricklevel backup on a bigger server and it takes a little bit longer, indexes are bigger to. So I won't use it - recover of a single folder is enough for me. But I noticed one thing: sometimes group finishes in red color with error: no savetime was sent on a mailbox. But when I check it, it looks that all of mailboxes are backed up fine. It happens a lot of times. There are no overlaping of backups, just the mailbox backup (default, not with -G switch). Any udea, how to get rid of these errors?

[4792] The backup of Information Store on HCRVELIN completed successfully.

[4792] Stopping performance monitor update thread.
[4792] Performance monitor update thread terminating
[4792] Sent savetime 1134710285 to savegrp.

Check what you have in log. Also check what build of 4.1 you have - I'm not sure what latest one is, but the one I have is 324 and it does have several patches inside.

What you downloaded is initial version of 4.1. For example if you go to download 7.1.3 you will download build 404 and not 421 or higher which is also available, but not via default links.
Currently latest build available (at the time of this writing) is 324. To obtain that you will probably need to open a case with support and request it.
The reason why savetime was not sent is because you have error before - save operation against Exchange database was not completed. One needs more complete log file to get an idea of what it is, but based on what you sent (error 0x000003e3) check

and see if it helps.

it looks that build of 4.1 I have is 148 (XBSA-1.0.1
LNMs_2004.Build.148). I think it is the latest one - i downloaded it just a few days ago and i don't find any other version.
It seems that just on a couple of mailboxes I get error like:
svmain(1105): process_mb_item_backup failed with status = 0x000003e3
[5812] 12/21/05 03:56:58 The XBSA transaction was not committed; the save operation did not complete.
[5812] 12/21/05 03:56:58 svmain(1140): end_mb_item_backup failed with status = 0x000003e3
[5812] 12/21/05 03:56:58 Stopping performance monitor update thread.
[5812] 12/21/05 03:56:58 Performance monitor update thread terminating
[5812] 12/21/05 03:56:58 Backup operation finished with errors. No savetime was sent.
[5812] 12/21/05 03:56:58 Completion time Wed Dec 21 03:56:58 2005
And group finishes red. It looks that mailboxes with such error are OK. Can it be related with something on Exchange itself?
