Tapes are labelled but not used, 0% appendable

Hi NW Gurus,

We find a number of Tapes (5 to 10 each day) in the library that are labelled by NW but never written to. We noticed this recently and looks like this has been happenning for quite sometime and we have been shipping 0% appendable tapes offsite for 30 days upto 7 years :-( . (I recommend you should also keep an eye on it).

has anyone seen this ? our group parallelism is set to 16 and Tape drives are LTO2 in ADIC i2K library on a NW 7.3.3 running on Soalris 10 and another environment is Windows 2003 with same issue.

Any ideas

Well, if there's enough tapes available, you may find a situation where some tapes are not used. Have you tried to put only these never used tapes in the library, and see if Nw uses them or asks for new ones?

NW uses the tapes if we leave them in the Library. Looks like it is labelling an extra tape once in a while with a random group.

I've never seen that before myself.

Have you looked at /nsr/logs/daemon.log to see when and maybe why the tapes are being labelled?

Have you used NMC to look at the tapes to see if there are very small savesets on it?

Even I have not see this before and would agree with Daniel. If you have sufficient tapes available and backup size is less NW may not use all of them.

Savegrp parallelism of 16 could use multiple tapes for same group simultaneously but that depends on the no. of drives you have and target session set there and also on the Server Parallelism.

Check if the blanks labelled tapes are in the correct pool.
