Using NMM to backup filesystem on Win2k8R2 servers

Now that we are required to backup exchange 2010 with NMM, I am trying to backup the filesystem.  I can't seem to be able to get this to work using NMM and a save set of C:\ and D:\.  The group fails with a "Failed" entry and that's it.

Has anyone tried this method of backup and do you have it working?

Hi Randy
First check the backup command. It should be same as for Exchange backups:
nsrsnap_vss_save

Also set the following Application Information variable on the client:

NSR_SNAP_TYPE=vss

The client has to be included in a snapshot group, but not the same group as the Exchange backups, in fact Exchange and FS backups CANNOT overlap for the same client.

Thank you
Carlos

I added theses two entries in the Application Information:

NSR_SNAP_TYPE=vss - This tells it to use VSS to backup (You already have this)

NSR_VSS_FORCE_SYSTEM_PROVIDER=yes - This forces it to use the System VSS writer.

Also, try using just C:\ and D:\ as the saveset not All as a test.

Also make sure you are not running the backups at the same time, it will cause a failure if two jobs try to use VSS at the same time.

Turn off checkpoint resume, client direct and data domain backup type. I had to disable one of these to get it to work.

Are do you meant by anyother changes

Thank you.

I meant turn al 3 off. I don't know if there is even an option to do checkpoint restart on a VSS backup.

Hi Deepu83,

In client configuration remove Pool entry, leave it blank.

In group configuration put Snapshot Pool to Datadomain.

In Datadomain pool configuration restrict that pool that only affected group can backup to that backup pool. In this pool configuration, think of it as an enabler, but also disabler. If you check that only one backup group can backup to that pool, you won't be able to backup to that pool from another backup group, so be careful.

Hope this helps

Hi Deepu,

This seems to be a permissions related issue:

NMM has detected that client does not have enough permissions.

Please add this in the Remote access field of the client:

*@*

Also ensure that within the Administrators group you have listed (*@client_name)

Thank you.

Carlos.
