Vmware Consolidated Backup

Hi All,

Any help would be appreciated!

I was hoping someone might be able to advise on an issue I'm having with Networker and VCB?

We are running Networker 7.3.3 and ESX3.0.2.

I have configured a VCB proxy server as per the documentation from EMC, and have ran through a backup and restore of a VM (The VM's are in DNS and have basic disks).

The issue comes when I attempt to backup more than one VM in a backup group, i.e. specify:
VM:VCBTEST1:*FULL*
VM:VCBTEST2:*FULL*
VM:VCBTEST3:*FULL*

Again, the backup completes ok, however when I attempt to do a restore of this data from our proxy (back to itself), the networker GUI will only present the 1st VM in my list - in the example above it would list VCBTEST2.

As a result, the only way I can currently setup multiple VM backups is to specify multiple backup groups, with 1 VM in each group.

Could you you tell me if this is how Networker is supposed to work? Or have I missed out something within the configuration!?

Please let me know if you need any extra information

Many thanks in advance!
Mark

With VCB you will find that EMC supports it now as of 7.4.x only (I know that VmWare interoperability guide says otherwise).

If I remember correctly VCB had limitation (on VmWare side) which in return resulted in fact you could have only 1 saveset specified per client. Later, with 7.4.2, for each VM you create client resource thus they might have overcome this problem in that way - no idea to be honest, but from what I have seen that worked (but does have some performance impact thus using parallelism 1 was required).

In your case, you may wish to check with mminfo if backups were saved correctly and perhaps changing time or doing ssid restore will address this until you move to 7.4SP2 or later.

I also had the problem with browsing through the savesets, and I also saw only one saveset.
The workaround for this problem is to point the recovery directly to the appropriate VCB directory of the vm. so tell the gui to browse in the directory for example D:\mnt\VCBTEST1-fullVM
Then you should see the vmdk files for restore.

Hi,

I have NetWorker 7.4.2 and I backup full with VCB. The backup runs ok, but when I show save set It shows the same for every virtual machines.

Example save set from Proxy Server:
VM:VirtualMachine1:*FULL*
VM:VirtualMachine2:*FULL*
VM:VirtualMachine3:*FULL*

In the process, I can show the new folder that VCB makes, it backup the data and delete the files and folders. When I show save set I only see the next:

Client Save Set SSID
Proxy Server FULLVM xxxxxx
Proxy Server FULLVM xxxxxy
Proxy Server FULLVM xxxxxz

I don't know what SSID is from each Virtual Machine because the Save Set is the same from every virtual machines. Can I know it? Anybody can help me?

Thank you.

Hi pgarevalo,

The VCB solution that Networker provides has changed from Networker 7.3.x to 7.4.x.

In 7.3.x it was necessary to create a client with the name of the proxy, and then specify the savest value of the vmname - followed by FULL or File level, etc....

In Networker 7.4.x enhanced VMware support has been implemented, so that you now specify the vmname as the client name, and use the "apps and modules tab" to specify:

Proxy backup type - "VCB"
Proxy backup host -

Once the VM has backed up, an entry in the indexes will appear for the vm.

However, it appears that EMC have not only enhanced support for VCB but also now charges for VCB on a per client basis! (Setting a VM client up in this manner will reduce your available licences by 1). As far as I'm aware this is not documented - and will undoubtedly catch a lot of people out!

Although in my testing the 7.3.3 method of backing up data on VCB still seems to work (and doesnt use a license). I have spoken to EMC who say that using the 7.3.3 process is unsupported.

Please note that the actual configuration of the proxy host is the same using Networker 7.4.x as it is for 7.3.x

Hope that helps!

Hi Mark,

So I had specify the next in the apps and modules tab:
Proxy backup type - "VCB"
Proxy backup host -

and in Save Set I could set "VM:Nombre_Maquina:*FULL*" and in the backup command "save_vcb.bat"?

Thank you very much,

Pablo.

Hi Pablo,

Yes, specify the Proxy backup type and host as above. The saveset attribute is: VM: :*FULL*

As far as I'm aware, in Networker 7.4.2 it is no longer required to specify savevcb.bat on the "apps and modules" tab. We have been using VCB without this for around 3 weeks and had no issues...

Cheers
Mark

No. Backup command is no longer used (it is called by remote process of course) and saveset name has also changed a bit. If you check admin guide for 7.4.2 there should be section which shows it. Also, KB does have an article on differences in VCB approach between 7.4SP2 and previous versions.
