I was wondering what the best way is to create a backup route for the setup which is shown in the attachment.
A backup route with a higher metric doesn't seem to work as the powerconnects don't do monitoring like Cisco does.
Do I need OSPF and if so, is there some example that someone can give ?

Whether you are using OSPF or static routes, this model switch does not offer any form of tracking connectivity to the next hop. The newer Dell switches offer a tracking feature similar to Cisco's IP SLA. Without this tracking feature the fail over will only occur if the physical port goes down.

Hi Daniel,
Thank you for your reply, I'm now testing physical links and even then the next hop, so higher metric, is not reached, do you have any idea there ?
From which version switch is tracking connectivity supported ? 6224 ?
Thanks!

Are clients able to communicate back and forth between the two switches? When testing I suggest either unplugging the cable or issuing the shutdown command to the interface. The switch should then see the downed interface and use the secondary static route.
Some force 10 switches offer uplink failure detection.

The 6224 does not, but the N-series do offer it.
