Beginner VLAN help to connect two switches and routers
I need some help setting up two dell switches. I've not had any experience of setting up VLAN's on switches before so a bit of help would be great.
At the moment we have one Dell PowerConnect 2748 switch on the ground floor for data, connected to a router for internet access. Also we have a separate basic netgear switch for the IP Phones connected to another router for all voice traffic.
We're expanding to the office on the first floor and have purchased another Dell PowerConnect 2824 switch. The two floors are linked together by fibre. At the moment I've set the switches to managed mode so I can access the web interface from the network. I've installed the fibre cable so the two switches are linked together and working using ports 48 and 24.
I now need help setting up two VLANs so that the 1st floor switch has ports 2-12 for data and 13-22 for voice. And the Ground floor switch with ports 2-24 for data and 25-46 for voice. Then I can get rid of the old netgear switch too.
I've followed some basic instructions and set up VLAN membership, but VLAN 1 is still showing all the ports as U. I can't get the phones to pick up their IP range.

did you change the PVID on the ports? It is on the Switch>VLAN>Port Settings page.

No. I haven't altered that page. What would I set them too? Not too sure?

the PVID setting determines which vlan untagged received packets are classified to. Set the value on each port to the same value you have set on the VLAN Membership page. (I am assuming you have a simple setup of one untagged vlan per port).

The problem is that when I click the vlan 1 I am unable to change the U and T settings. I've set up vlan 2 on both routers so half the ports are U except for the final port I have set to T.
I can't seem to change vlan 1. What settings would I use for the vlan port settings? I've read the documentation, but can't follow it. I'm very new at this.

So, should I set up say VLAN 2 as data and VLAN 3 as voice. Then change the ports as needed.
If thats how to do it, what settings do I put in the Port Settings page? I don't understand the Frame Type and Ingress Filtering?

vlan 1 is the default vlan. Once you put a port in a different vlan and change the PVID for that port, the port will no longer be in vlan 1. vlan 1 cannot be tagged, so the vlan membership page will only show a "U" or a for vlan 1.

Your vlan assignment sound reasonable.
Leave Frame-Type= admit all and Ingress Filtering=Enable.

It still doesn't work.
I've tried attaching another fibre connection, so I can have two separate VLAN's. But now when I set the Port Settings for each VLAN, the two switches can't ping each other, so one floor loses connection?

remove one of the fiber connections so that the 2748 and 2824 only have a single connection between them.
Assuming port 24 on the 2824 and port 48 on the 2748 are connected: port 24 (2824) AND on port 48 (2748), on the VLAN Membership pages, set vlans 2 AND 3 to 'T".
This will 'Trunk' the ports so that they both carry vlan 2 and 3 as tagged traffic. This will allow the vlan 2 and vlan 3 ports on each switch to talk to eachother.

I've tried this about 4 times and its still not working. Must be something I'm missing. What I've done so far is this
In VLAN Membership 2824 VLAN1 ports 2-11 set to U. VLAN2 ports 12-22 set to U, port 24 set to T
In VLAN Port Settings 2824 VLAN2 set on ports 12-22.
Therefore if I go to the VLAN membership page the settings for VLAN1 are U on all but 12-22.
The same on 2748, but with the VLAN's spanning more ports and using port 48 set to T for VLAN2

describe your testing. steps, what your expect, and what you observe.
Also, make sure port 24 on 2824 and port 48 on 2748 is set to U for vlan 1 also.
we are soooo close.

I've managed to get it working. I reset the switches to factory and started again with both. This is what I did, not sure why it didn't work before!
Switch 1 (2824).
In VLAN membership page
VLAN2 ports 2-11. VLAN3 ports 12-22. All set to U .
Port 24 set to T in both VLANs
In VLAN port setting page
Set all ports as above to the VLAN they should be in. Left port 24 in VLAN1
Switch 2 (2748)
Same as above, just more ports in VLAN2 and 3 and port 48 set to T
Plugged in cables booted up and working fine!

The only thing not working is connecting to the GUI. The switch is in the same ip range as VLAN2, but I presume I need to be plugged into VLAN1 for access to the GUI.

did you have to set anything in your router for things to work properly?
