Dell PowerConnect 6248 switch set IP to get to it's web

Got the RS-232 for this and that works.

Trying to set a IP and it shows it right but going to it's IP page can't be displayed.

I set it to factory defaults.

Looks like I have to type "enable" 1st thing.

Then this:

Dell SW1#show ip interface

Management Interface:

IP Address..................................... 192.168.86.29
Subnet Mask.................................... 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway................................ 192.168.86.1
Burned In MAC Address.......................... 0019.B99C.D547
Network Configuration Protocol Current......... None
Management VLAN ID............................. 1

Routing Interfaces:
Netdir Multi
Interface IP Address IP Mask Bcast CastFwd
---------- --------------- --------------- -------- --------
vlan 2 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable
vlan 3 192.168.3.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable
vlan 4 192.168.4.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable
vlan 5 192.168.5.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable

Dell SW1#

So the IP is right 192.168.86.29 and the gateway too.

Is there some Ethernet port I should plug this in to? I plugged it in Ethernet 1 and 45.

Been looking a long time on here and a lot of commands they say to do I get errors from them.

I want to update it but need to get a IP for it so I can get to it on my LAN 1st.

Seems like have to be in moods for some commands to work like I did this:

Dell SW1#console
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Dell SW1#

Looks like can't go in that mode when in this mode.

Here is a command that works that show it's version.

Dell SW1#show switch

Management Preconfig Plugged-in Switch Code
Switch Status Model ID Model ID Status Version
------ ------------ ------------- ------------- --------------------- --------
1 Mgmt Switch PCT6248 PCT6248 OK 2.0.0.12

Dell SW1#

So how do I set this up to get on it's web interface though my LAN as a IP of 192.168.86.29 picked that because nothing else on my LAN is using it now. I did try DHCP but it never got a IP.

Dell SW1#show ip interface

Management Interface:

vlan 5 192.168.5.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable

Dell SW1#config

Dell SW1(config)#ip address vlan 300

Dell SW1(config)#interface vlan 300
VLAN ID not found.

Dell SW1(config)#ip https server

Secure HTTP could not be enabled.

Dell SW1(config)#

says this on that page.

Example
The following example enables the switch to be configured from a browser.
console(config)#ip https server

I got the Ethernet in port 1 and can't get to it.

This site can’t be reached

192.168.86.29 took too long to respond.

Try:

ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

Is there a way to just turn this in to a switch with out vlan's. So can plug all the LAN Ethernet in it and get on one LAN.

I can not upgrade this till I can get on though it's Ethernet.

Set a Windows 10 lap top to a static IP of 192.168.1.6 and have the Ethernet plug in to port 1 of the switch and the green LED's are on in that port.

Got to 192.168.1.5 and it still can't be displayed.

This is the default boot up of the switch.

Dell SW1>enable

Dell SW1#show ip interface

Management Interface:

IP Address..................................... 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask.................................... 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway................................ 192.168.1.1
Burned In MAC Address.......................... 0019.B99C.D547
Network Configuration Protocol Current......... None
Management VLAN ID............................. 1

Routing Interfaces:
Netdir Multi
Interface IP Address IP Mask Bcast CastFwd
---------- --------------- --------------- -------- --------
vlan 2 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable
vlan 3 192.168.3.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable
vlan 4 192.168.4.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable
vlan 5 192.168.5.1 255.255.255.0 Disable Disable

Dell SW1#

I can only get to it by the RS-232 on it.

Don't know why I can't set it back to it's factory default on boot I press the 2 and tell it to but must be doing something wrong. Because it should come up with the setup wizard then. It never does.

Hope some one can help.

That was not it. It's something else on my LAN. I unplug the Ethernet from the Dell switch and scan again and something else has that IP 192.168.86.29 So false alarm I guess could say.

I set the IP it shows this:

console#show ip interface

Management Interface:

IP Address..................................... 192.168.86.29
Subnet Mask.................................... 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway................................ 192.168.86.1

Network Configuration Protocol Current......... None
Management VLAN ID............................. 1

Routing Interfaces:
Netdir Multi
Interface IP Address IP Mask Bcast CastFwd
---------- --------------- --------------- -------- --------

console#

I can ping is so I did this:

nmap -PI 192.168.86.29

Starting Nmap 7.60 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2020-01-18 19:44 EST
Nmap scan report for 192.168.86.29
Host is up (0.00091s latency).
Not shown: 999 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
8099/tcp open unknown
MAC Address: A4:8D:3B:F8:6E:0E (Vizio)

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 2.79 seconds

Tested it going here:

http://192.168.86.29:8099/

But still "This site can't be reached"

Can I open up port 80 on it some how and then will it work?

I guess the file system is messed up so I picked 2 on boot and then 6 and it said it will delete all. I said yes. Then went to boot it pressing 1 and it said no OS so then I said to use X modem and started to upload the “PC6200V3.3.18.1.stk” file at 9600 and I think it’s on it’s last Packet now. I hope this works will just have to press 7 to update boot code when it’s done.

Then I guess it will boot up to the wizard and I can put in the IP I want it to use I hope.

It worked so it updated. It did take over a hour.

But I still can't get on it and if I follow it here I still get a error like this:

console>en

console#show ip interface vlan 1

Routing is not enabled on this interface.

console#show ip interface

Management Interface:

IP Address..................................... 192.168.86.10
Subnet Mask.................................... 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway................................ 192.168.86.1
Burned In MAC Address.......................... 0000.0000.0000
Network Configuration Protocol Current......... None
Management VLAN ID............................. 1

Routing Interfaces:
Netdir Multi
Interface State IP Address IP Mask Bcast CastFwd
---------- ----- --------------- --------------- -------- --------

console#show ip interface vlan 1

Routing is not enabled on this interface.

console#configure

console(config)#interface vlan 1

console(config-if-vlan1)#ip address 192.168.86.9 255.255.255.0
ERROR: Routing is not allowed on the Management VLAN.

console(config-if-vlan1)#

I guess have to set the IP on vlan1 to get to it's web page?

The wizard now comes up when I delete config and reboot it. Before this upgrade it did not.

I got on the web page of it. Had to do this:

@RaymondDay wrote:

The xmodem did update it. Because it shows this:

console#show switch

Management Standby Preconfig Plugged-in Switch Code
SW Status Status Model ID Model ID Status Version
--- ---------- --------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -----------
1 Mgmt Sw PCT6248 PCT6248 OK 3.3.18.1

console#

So for sure that worked.

The file I xmodem uploaded to it with 9600 speed was PC6200v3.3.18.1.stk

So the numbers = the same.

Got this switch mounted now. Plug in some Ethernet cables to it. Nice that it will say if the cables are 1000 speed. Test and will show the Length.

Can it show the Cable Length in feet not meters? Is there a setting for this? Or even the Temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit?

I cut a 120 mm hole in the top of it and mounted a fan in side towards the font and it fits in side like over the heat sinks. I put jumpers on the 4 fan plug so it don't give a red LED fan error. Plug the 120 MM fan it it's 5th plug it was not used but I had to rearrange the pins so the fan would work in the plug. They don't have the fan plugs standard!

With this fan can't even hear it and the web page said temp is OK at 40 C.

Got a photo of it on my Google drive here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/UBfsNmvioWUr1Rvf7 shows the fan I put in the top. This photo is when I 1st did it.
