LAG/NIC Teaming with VRTX and VMware ESXi
I have a VRTX blade server with 3 blades. I am trying to maximize bandwidth throughput to the blades. I have several VM's across all 3 blades. Some of the VM's have E1000E NIC, some of them have VMXNET3. The ones with VMXNET3 on Blades 1 and 2 are reporting 4Gb/s network speed. The VM's on Blade 3 (and VM's with E1000E) are reporting 1Gb/s speed. I understand overall throughput will be limited to the 4Gb/s because of my external ports on the VRTX 1Gb Switch Module. However, I'm aiming to max throughput to the server VM's themselves so if I am transferring data over the network from a VM on Blade 1 to a VM on Blade 3 I should get 2Gb/s speeds because Blade 3 only has 2 NICs. Regardless of which servers I am doing a network speed test on, it is always resulting in 1Gb/s.
My question is, do I need to enable LAG on the internal ports of the Switch Module to work with VMware NIC Teaming? Attached below is a diagram of how my switch LAG ports connect to the External Ports on the Switch Module using LAG in trunk mode. It also shows configuration of the Internal Ports and VMware switch settings for NIC Teaming.

Hi DtT21,
The vmxnet3 reported speed can report speeds much higher than the actual throughput. It is effectively a virtual 10Gb nic. As for the copy speed with the team or a lag, how are you testing? A normal file copy is not going to be twice as fast as teaming doesn’t double the speed, it just allows for two transfers to happen at the same time at full 1Gb. https://dell.to/3gR0qFn

@DELL-Josh Cr Would I have the correct LAG configured according to my diagram or would I need LAG enabled on the internal ports of the IO module as well? The goal is to maximize throughput and bandwidth while retaining load balancing for individual VM's or more specifically the ones on Blade 2.

Yes, you would want to do it on both internal and external ports.

@DELL-Josh Crdo you know if standard vswitch in vsphere works with LAG? I enable LAG on the internal ports for blade 2 and all communications stop until I turn off the LAG. I don't have a license for distributed switches in vmware which have more advanced features.

I believe you can do a static LAG, but LACP is a distributed switch feature.
