Limiting bandwidth on specific ports with 3324
Hello,
I have a machine that is used as a web/ftp server on our small corporate network. The problem is that sometimes the traffic from the internet gets quite heavy. So much so, that our cable connection gets flooded. We start having problems with timeouts on the web and email on our desktops.
We use a Netgear Firewall/Router to share the internet with a 3324 connected to it. All desktops are connected to the 3324. Is there a way to limit the traffic between the router and the server box? Preferably while allowing the rest of us full speed access to the server? (So traffic to and from the internet would be throttled, but our internal access to the server would be full speed.)

The PowerConnect 3300 series switches does not offer capabilities such as traffic policing. The PowerConnect 6024, however, does offer this functionality. Bandwidth limitation is configured on each individual interface, therefore, configuration on 1 interface will not affect bandwidth for other interfaces. In addition to setting a threshold for maximum bandwidth, the PowerConnect 6024 can be configured to drop packets that exceed the limitation or remark the packet with a lower DSCP value.
Since policing is applied to incoming traffic, you could limit the internet traffic coming from the outside into your network. The PowerConnect 6024 also offers traffic shaping, allowing you to configure a specific committed information rate, thus limiting the traffic leaving the interface to a steady stream.
