Networking with DELL R740

I am in the process of configuring Dell R740 as ESXi host and it came along with following network gear;

a). 1 Intel X710 Dual Port 10Gb Direct Attach, SFP+, Converged Network Adapter
b). 1 Intel X710 DP 10Gb DA/SFP+, + I350 DP 1Gb Ethernet, Network Daughter Card

My query is, should I be using (b) for uplinks and (a) for SAN connectivity?

Another thing is that (b) has mix of 10 GB and 1 GB interfaces.Is it okay to configure uplinks with different speeds?

Any of those 10Gb interfaces should work fine for the SAN connection. I suggest not combining the 1Gb and 10Gb interfaces together. Instead utilize the connections independent from one another. Typically I see the lower speed interfaces used for dedicated management, or for virtual machines with low network usage.

Thanks Daniel. We are going to;

a) 1 Intel X710 Dual Port 10Gb Direct Attach, SFP+, Converged Network Adapter --> Use this for SAN connectivity
b) 1 Intel X710 DP 10Gb DA/SFP+, + I350 DP 1Gb Ethernet, Network Daughter Card --> Use 1Gbps port channel for management switch
--> Use 10Gbps port channel for Virtul machine switch

SAN connectivity with 1 port is not a good practice.

You would typically have a SAN with redundant controllers and redundant switches, and therefor should plan on redundant connections (iSCSI I assume, over 10Gbit).

With two X710 dual port cards, I'd use one port from each card.

Use the other two 10Gbit ports for Virtual Machine to LAN traffic (if needed with multiple VLANs), and use the 2 1Gbit (i350) links for host management.

Thanks for your responses.

I dont think we can connect X710 directly to a SAN switch.

The Intel X710 adapter is a Ethernet adapter and the Cisco MDS9148 switch is a fibre switch.

The Intel X710 adapters need to be attached to a switch similar to a Cisco Nexus 5672.

Is there a way to check if qlogic QLE2462 ck is complatible with DELL PE R740?

I have a couple in spare that I would like to use.

The X710 is actually a CNA. If you have a switch that supports FCF, you could use those 10Gbit NICs as a combination of a NIC and an (FC) HBA.

However, buying a switch for this is a lot more expensive than just using an FC HBA.

See my reply on your other thread about trying to use that 4Gbit/s Qlogic 2462 in a 14th gen server (basically; it will likely work, but Dell probably never tested that 'old' card in their newest server range.
