PowerConnect 5324 - no response on the terminal

I have a pair of new 5324's.

I have them connected to an XP box with hyperterminal, using the serial cables they came with.

I can watch them boot and go through the post, takes about 10 minutes before I get the console prompt, then it doesn't seem to accept any input.  It won't even respond when I hit return or escape at the start of the boot.

If I plug a network cable in between the switch and a PC the console responds with the corresponding port coming up.  So the switch itself seems to be up and running.

I have tried both serial cables, both switches and two different PC's.

I also have a couple of 3348's sitting here, plug them into the same setup, and they work fine.

Anyone have any ideas before I end up with two bent 5324's?

Thanks

The most common reasons for this symptom are the following:

  1. Incorrect settings in Hyperterminal - If Flow Control is not set to none, you will typically get output, but no input.
  2. Wrong serial cable - If a straight-through serial cable is used rather than a null modem cable, you will get output, but no input.
  3. Emulation problems within Hyperterminal - The slimmed-down version of Hyperterminal packaged with Windows XP has known emulation problems. Try downloading either Hyperterminal Private Edition or Tera Term.

Thanks Greg

Tera Term has come through with the goods.  I still don't understand why the Hyperterminal set up worked on a 3348, but not on the 5324, but it doesn't matter.

I have managed to log in now and uncover the couple of duplex mismatches that were giving me greif, and all is well.

Thanks heaps for your quick response.

I am currently having the same issues connecting to the powerconnect 5324. I am using the cable that came with the switch, I have downloaded and am using tera term, and I have also set flow to hardware. However, it still takes at least 10 minutes to get to the console prompt. Once at the prompt it will not accept any input. The system takes the longest time right after displaying the connection status of the ports. It stops after g24 and stalls for several minutes before finally displaying: "01-Jan-2000 01:03:37 %INIT-I-Startup: Cold Startup" then it hangs for several more minutes before finally giving the console prompt. Any other ideas on what might be causing this issue? Thanks!
