Powerconnect 6224 VLAN Down?

I just created a new VLAN 51 on my 6224 core switch.

I've assigned it an IP Address, configured routing, assigned it to multiple trunks, and I've assigned an access port to it as well. This is the 8th VLAN i'm setting up, haven't had any issues with the others.

Here is what I see when I do show ip interface vlan 51

PHX_Core_Switch#show ip interface vlan 51

Routing Interface Status....................... Down
Primary IP Address............................. 10.200.51.1/255.255.255.0
Routing Mode................................... Enable
Administrative Mode............................ Enable
Forward Net Directed Broadcasts................ Disable
Proxy ARP...................................... Enable
Local Proxy ARP................................ Disable
Active State................................... Inactive
MAC Address.................................... 5C26.0AF9.9E8C
Encapsulation Type............................. Ethernet
IP MTU......................................... 1500
Bandwidth...................................... 10000 kbps
Destination Unreachables....................... Enabled
ICMP Redirects................................. Enabled

Why is this interface down?! Help?! I'm going nuts over here!

Just got off the phone with Dell support. They couldn't figure it out either, we created a new VLAN 60 and it came up fine and worked exactly as expected.

Maybe it's a bug in the 3.3.3.3 Firmware.

A VLAN will be in a down status until there is traffic on the VLAN. I know you said you have a port in access mode for the VLAN, do we have a client sending traffic, plugged into that access port?

November 13th, 2013 07:00

I assigned a port to VLAN 51 on the access switch stack and plugged a laptop directly into it. It received no packets back, do I need to plug it into the core switch in order to get the VLAN up? This is in addition to the port that is assigned access vlan 51 on the core switch.

That seems incredibly goofy to me if that is the case.

I've configured an IP Helper on VLAN 51 so ideally it should be getting an IP address. I just tried it again, looking for DHCP in both the stack and the core, as well as with an IP configured in the stack and the core. No difference. I'm pasting the config of my 6224 below.  Thanks.

Sound like you have the VLANs configured correct.y.  we have VLAN 51 created on the 6224 and on the access switch. We have the VLAN trunked between the two switches. And we have a port in access mode for VLAN 51.

Is the laptop setup with an IP address in the subnet of VLAN 51, with VLAN 51 IP address as the default gateway?

For testing purposes I would give the laptop a static IP address ip address 10.200.51.x with default gateway of ip address 10.200.51.1, then test.

Is DHCP relay working on the rest of the VLANs?

Looks like 1/xg1,1/xg2 and port-channel 1 have VLAN 51 added to it, are one of these connections to the switch that has the laptop on it?

What model switch is the laptop plugged into? And how is it's port configured?

Were you able to try the static IP address?

On the 5548 port channel 1, might try adding

# switchport trunk allowed vlan add 51

If that still does not work i would try plugging the laptop directly into the 6224.

November 13th, 2013 13:00

Yes, DHCP works on the other VLANs

Yes, Port Channel 1 goes to the stack of switches that the laptop is plugged into

It is a stack of 7 5548s

Here is the config for the 5548

I've tried that, doesn't actually change the config. It seems trunks on the 5548 are either all or nothing.

I've plugged the laptop directly into port 13 on 1/g13 of the 6624 which is configured as an access port for VLAN 51 with an IP address, and trying to get a DHCP address without any change.
