high latencies on routing interface on Powerconnect 6248

Hello

I have two vlan routed with one powerconnect 6248. All works right, but when many users turn on their computers in the morning or turn off in the afternoon, the routing interface gives many packet loss and high latencies between two vlans.

Which could be the reason?

While the problem is occuring AND while it is not occuring.  Get the output of the following commands:

 - console# show proess cpu
 - console# devs ipForwardStatsShow
 - console# show arp
 - console# show arp switch
 - console# show bridge address-table
 - console# show spanning-tree

Anytime, get the output of the following command (just once) on a switch that had the problem and has not bee rebooted.
 - console# show logging

Describe your network.
 - general description
 - do you have Cisco switches in your network?

Lastly a short description of the network:

 

First no we have no Cisco switches in our network. We have a Pix and ASA but no swiches.

As far as the Network is concerned we have 2 6224's, 3 3448, and 2 3548's...

It is set up in this way:

Each 6224 has a stack of switches attached to it...

So one 6224 has the stack of 3 3448's (This is the 6224 where I took all the commands from)

and the other has a stack of 2 3548's

The 6224's are under 2 network segments and they are routed to one another through VLAN 10. So that the VLANs on each side of our network can communicate but still use a different gateway to the internet.

There is a trunk from each 6224 to it's stack via an SFP fibre connection

The 2 6224 are attached via port 1/g3 on each device which is set into VLAN 10 and used as a way to route traffic between the 2 devices.

I know this was alot of stuff hopefully you can follow it all,

There is no output when I do the show arp switch command, just gives me an empty table...

The switch is routing in software when the issue occurs.  Why?  I am not sure, but I think it is because the 3448 stack connected to port 1/g21 keeps issuing topology change announcements and this is causing the 6224 to have MAC addresses in its ARP table that are not in its mac address table.   There were more cases of missing mac table entries for the slow routing case in the data you posted.

The 3448 stack is the STP root switch in your network.  If I understand your network, the 3448 stack is an edge switch and really should not be the STP root.  Let's fix this and some other things while we are at it.

Some things to try:
- update all switches to latest firmware (always a good idea when having problems, especially on the 62xx switches):

console (config)# spanning-tree priority 8192         (lower number is higher priority)

- set all ports not connected to switches to portfast.  Do this on the 3448 and 3548 stacks and on the 6224 switches.  For example for port /1e1:
console (config)# interface ethernet 1/e1
console (config-if)# spanning-tree portfast

Hi,

 

Did someone ever come up with what the problem was.  I am experiencing the same problem...if i ping within the same vlan, i am ok...if i ping into another VLAN...I see some packets loss and high latencies...the high latency isnt constant..but it jumps up and then loses a packet...I am using a Dell PowerConnect 6248 with the latest firmware (v2.2.03)....

Can you post your information also?  I would like to see:

While the problem is occuring AND while it is not occuring.  Get the output of the following commands:

 - console# show proess cpu
 - console# devs ipForwardStatsShow
 - console# show arp
 - console# show arp switch
 - console# show bridge address-table
 - console# show spanning-tree

Anytime, get the output of the following command (just once) on a switch that had the problem and has not been rebooted.
 - console# show logging

Describe your network.

We have 24 switches directly connected to 6248...they are not daisy chained, but rather each has its own uplink to the 6248.  All the other switches are Dell powerconnect 5448's except 2 are Cisco 2960G's.

I need you to check the output of "show arp" and see if there are any multicast MAC addresses (LSB of first byte is 1).

Some other things to try if you are still seeing the issue:

- make sure all edge ports are set to portfast

- set arp timeout equal to the mad address aging time (arp timeout 300)

- Are you using Microsoft NLB clustering?  The problem here is that the arp response from the NLB cluster has a different source MAC address than the HW address that is in the ARP response packet.  Therefore the NLB MAC address is never learned at layer 2.  Another issue with Microsoft NLB clustering is that if it is set to use multicast MAC addresses, the switch will not put the multicast address in the ARP table.  To fix these issues, set NLB to use unicast addresses and put a static ARP entry in the switch with the correct unicast MAC address.

- Another possible issue with your network is multipath.  This is when the network path from client to server is different than from server to the client.  Eventually the MAC addresses age out of the intermediate switches and software routing can occur.  To check this, to a trace route from the client to the server and then from the server to the client.   If the paths are different, you may have a multipath issue.

- Another possibility is that you have a full ARP table (896 entries).  Your data does not show this, but you may want to try "no arp dynamic renew" to free up entries in the arp table sooner. 

- Another possibility is an arp table hash collision.  This can happen when the arp table gets close to full (your case).  Freeing up the arp table entries faster ("no arp dynamic renew" and "arp timeout 300"), should also alleviate this problem.
