1735 wireless 1397 WLAN mini card upgrade
Now that I have a Linksys N4200 router I want to upgrade the card that is in my 1735 Studio. Dell support suggested the 5100 Wireless-Network Mini-Card. That’s
all well and good but looking at the picture on Dell site it is about half the size as the one that is in the computer which is a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini
Card. I don't think the 5100 will bolt in the slot, too short. Any suggestions on what to put in this thing????

Bill,
It should come with a disk and instructions. Most adapters, you install the drivers first, then shut down the computer and unplug. Remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any power left.
Attach the wireless adapter. Put the battery in and start the computer.
Make sure to press Fn and F2 to turn on the adapter, if needed. It should then find the drivers and install. Make sure it looks ok in the device manager.

Rick you were very helpful however I will need help to find the driver. I have made a new post, this is a copy.
I have the Wireless 5300 PCI Express Internal Half-Height Mini-Card ordered and now need to find the drivers. My system is a 1735 Studio laptop running 64bit Windows 7. The Dell sales rep said the card came only with the card and a flat head screw.(no instructions, figures)

I want to get the same answers. I recently upgraded my wireless router to a Linksys 4200N. My conversation with a Dell sales rep recommended the 2.4/5 GHz WiFi Link 5100 wireless-network Mini-Card. Sure would like to know it that is the way to go.

I have used the Intel 5100 AGN before without any problems. I also have the Intell 6200 installed on this system, with no problems.
I'm not sure how many antenna wires there are, so you may want to check into that.
Since the Linksys 4200N is a dual band router, you shouldn't have any problems connecting, unless you want the N adapter installed for speed.
Any wireless devices, like printers, iPods, usb adapters, etc..., need to connect to the wireless G band using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11.
To make things easier, you may want to make a Legirons-G SSID and a Legirons-N SSID so you know which band you're connecting to.

Each card has two antenna. Which card do I upgrade? I would post a pitcure but don't see any way to do that.

After removing the back cover I am a little confused on which card needs to be changed to upgrade to the Wireless N. It has a WLAN (half card) a WWAN and a
WPAN. I know the WPAN is the Bluetooth card. Do I need to change just the half card or both (WWAN)? I will open it up again to check on the antenna leads.

Seems I have more questions than answers. Looking at the 5300 WLAN card I see it has three places to plug in an antenna's. My computer has a antenna wire that is not used. Would the 5300 be the best card for me?

5100. CLICK HERE and click on the compatibility tab to see if it is compatible with your system. (This is refurbished but gives you an idea if it will work.
5300. CLICK HERE and click on the compatibility tab to see if it is compatible with your system.

Thanks Rich, it appears either one will work. I think I will go with the 5300. Should I go ahead and download drivers or wait until after the card is installed? Hope I am not throwing away 90+ dollars.
