Acquiring IP address

Hi

I have 2 Dell PC on the same LAN with DSL Gateway providing DHCP.  First DELL PC working fine for 1 year.

Second DELL PC just installed,  cannot acquire IP address.  Fitted with Intel (R) PRO/100 VE NIC.  The LAN Hub shows green led indicating connection.

I also tried a wireless LAN and had same problem

PC is Dimension D1144

Help Please.

Rob

PS  I did not request LAN connection on the order as I intended touse Wireless.  However having seen the Intel NIC was on board I decide to use it.  Will DELL have disabled the card in some way ?

First of all there is no such thing as a D1144. Which model do you have? Does the network card show up in Device Manager when expand the listing by clicking the + sign next to Network Adapters? Does show any problems in Device Manager? Which version of Windows are you running? Does the network device show up in Network Properties?

Go to Start > Run and type cmd then click on OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then it the Enter key. Post the resulting output in a reply here on the fourm.

Steve

Thanks for reply.

I have a copy of the invoice and it states D1144 Dimension 4700 - Hope that gives you enough.

Windows XP V5.1 Service Pack 2

Device Manager shows adapter as working.

Adapter is showing in Network Properties as TCP/IP protocol, Obtain IP address automatically, Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Let me know any more info required

As I said in my last message regarding running ipconfig /all "Post the resulting output in a reply here on the fourm".

I'm somewhat confused here. First, I don't understand why the subnet mask is 255.255.255.248. Maybe it's because I don't understand the dsl gateway. Is the dsl gateway assigning the IP address and the subnet mask? Second, do you really nead the ipV6 tunnel adapter?

Steve

Sorted - I renamed some Winsock.dll files, as suggested in the troubleshooter.

Rebooted PC and DSL router

So far so good, thanks for your fast response and help.
