DSL internet connection failed

I have a Studio  Xps435MT connected to the internet through a 2Wire DSL modum using an ethernet cable. Installed a new hard drive last week after drive failure, Reinstalled Dell drivers and utilities using disc, then operating system, software, updated drivers, installed SP2.

Internet connection worked fine since then. Yesterday and from then on, Windows and modum will not recognize network adapters so not internet availability although device manager shows them working. Modum does work with my laptop so I can access internet through that.

Network and sharing shows unidentified network and limited connectivity IPv4 and 6, on IPv4 no default gateway or DNS server identified, no IPv6 gateway. Tried reinstalling modum but shows no network adapters identified.

Windows system info shows that intel 82567LF 2GB connection installed and reset today, default IP gateway not available.

Any suggestions?

Hi a5j6brad ,

Greetings from Dell.

Kindly check the below mentioned options and revert if issue persists.

Make sure your settings in network connections are correct.

Go to Control Panel, then Network/Network and Internet Connections.  Right click on your Local Area Connection and go to Properties.  Click on TCP/IP for your NIC and then click Properties.  Make sure that your IP Address and DNS Servers are set to be Obtained Automatically.

Try running the Internet Connection Wizard

1.      Go to your Control Panel

2.      Open Internet Options

3.      Go to the Connections Tab

4.      At the top of that page click Setup

5.      Make sure you check Connect using a Local Area Connection/Network

Ping

Use this step when you have been through the steps above and the Internet is still not working

A.     Go to Start, Run, in the Open box type Command (try cmd if that doesn’t work) and click OK

B.     When your Command Prompt comes up type in - ipconfig - if you receive an IP address of 10.0.0.x (depending on you Network configuration this address may start with 192.168.x.x or something else) then follow the steps listed in the chart.  If your IP Address comes up as 169.x.x.x the go to step 22.

Release and/or Renew IP Addresses

  1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Click Run... on this menu.
  3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.
  4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).
  5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.
  6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).

Thanks for your advice. ipconfig shows the following:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

  -  no specific DNS suffix

  -  Autoconfig IPv6 address: 169.254.177.131

  -  no default gateway

Tunnel adapters Local Area Connection 7, 12, 13

  - Media disconnected

  - no connection -specific DNS

Looks like the computer is not recognizing media. Could this be a card problem?

169 IP address is assigned by Windows due to the fact that an IP address was not obtained from a DHCP server. This could be caused due to a bad connection, a problem with the DHCP server or a faulty NIC. You can open a command prompt and try ipconfig/release and the ipconfig/renew.

a5j6brad,

Try the easiest solution and poser cycle your routers.

Power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer and try to connect.

What happens?
