Inspiron E1505 and Intel ProSet wirless not working

I have an Inspiron E1505, XP, with the Intel ProSet 3945ABG wireless.  Originally, it was working.  Somewhere along the way it ceased to work.  Here's what I find:
- no wireless network adapter listed (only the first two in the list below)
- laptop comes up with "no wireless driver" on boot up
- have uninstalled ProSet software and reinstalled with latest version (have done this with two previous versions supported by Dell)

- when looking at the device manager "show hidden devices" the following list comes up under the
network adapters:

1394 Net Adapter
Boradcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller
Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller - packet scheduler miniport
Direct Parallel
Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection - Packeet Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (ATW)
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IP) Packedt Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (PPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)

When I uninstalled the ProSet software, I did not blow away any of the Intel Pro/Wireless or WAN Miniport adapters and reload the.  Should I have done that?
What are my next steps?
