Looking for help with network security

Hi, I just setup my Dell 1184. I know how to setup basic network security to keep people from using my internet for free. I live in an apartment though and the guy that lives in the room next to me is a professional hacker. I don't trust him and I am nervous that he will gain access to my information. Can I implement more advanced security or is he going to be able to hack no matter what?
