Networking 4550 & 4300

I have a dimension 4550 running windows xp pro and would like to network with a dimension 4300 I just aquired which came with windows ME. Most of the applications I will be using won't run on ME so I need to upgrade the operating system to 2000 or XP. I'm thinking that XP would be the better bet, can I save some $'s and use XP home or would I be better off spending the xtra $40.00 for the Professional version?
According to the specs the 4300 max memory is 512MB, it came with 128MB. Should I max it out at 512? Any advantage or disadvantage in adding the 512 to the 128?
Any thoughts?

John Holscher,

You should have no problem networking a D4300 running XP Home and a D4550 running XP Pro.  Make sure you configure XP Pro for Simple File Sharing (which is the default - the other option is Classic File Sharing.)  XP Home only supports Simple File Sharing.

XP runs best with at least 512MB of RAM.  I just looked at the D4300 online specifications and it does indeed say max memory is 512MB.  But the memory configurator at Crucial.com says the D4300 can handle up to 1GB, 512MB in each slot.  The D4300 has 2 memory slots.  I'm inclined to believe Crucial.  XP can run with less than 512MB.  I run one PC with only 384MB and have seen XP run with 256MB, even 128MB (very poorly.)  Assuming the 128MB in the D4300 is using only one slot you could get just 256MB for the other slot, bringing the D4300 up to 384MB.  Depending on what applications you want to run on the D4300 this may be adequate for your needs.  If you need more you can get another stick of memory and replace the 128MB stick.
