Problem with SpeedStream 4100 dsl modem... (I think)

I have a fairly simple setup with a Dell 4550 desktop connected to the internet with AT&T DSL using a Siemens SpeedStream 4100 modem.

Lately, in the past couple of months I have been losing my connection from time to time.  I will go days without a problem and then some days I will need to cycle power on the modem several times.

Does anyone know how to tell if the problem is with the modem or with the ISP knockiong me off the connection?

Appreciate the help!  :smileyhappy:

Next time you have a disconnect, call your ISP tech support and have them run a diagnostic test of your modem from their end. It might be the modem, in which case they can provide you with a replacement.

Are you connected to the modem by ethernet cable, or wirelessly?

Thanks for the reply!

I am connect via ethernet cable.

I also have an "SBC support software tool" that I can run that may help.

It almost seems that it may be a function of tension on one of the cables, but that seems a little remote.

I am wondering if they will knock you off line afer so many minutes of being idle. :smileyhappy:

That looks like a problem with the modem. The lights should stay on as they are your visual indication that the modem is probably working and communicating with you ISP.

Are you renting  the modem? Seems to me your ISP should be replacing this as it is their equipment unless you actually had to purchase it.

That is the thing -- the modem lights all go out.

That is why I am wondering if there is a problem with the power connector.

Also, the SBC(aka AT&T) rep told me that I have to purchase a modem from the AT&T store to replace the one I have.  Is the rep being honest with me?

The modem is working at the moment though. :smileyindifferent:

Unfortunately, I had to purchase it, so I guess I may need to buy another one. The service has been pretty good, too bad the modem has started to go South on me.
