sporttraining,

When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the desktop/notebook system utility and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Since XP and XP SP1 do NOT support WPA-Security, you'll need to attach the ethernet cable and use Windows Updates to update to XP SP2 or SP3. I would also get the custom updates while there, like .net framework, needed to run many applications.

PudgyOne,

Thank you. I had to take my desktop (Demension 4550) to a repair shop and they wiped everything and re-installed my operating system. The system installed is XP Home SP3. When I brought the desktop home, I was able to plug in my wireless usb mouse and plug in my aux storage drive usb and both work fine. When I plug in (usb) my 1180 wireless adapter, I get nothing. It has power as the little green light comes on but it isn't recognized on the system. I then try to re-install the original 1180 software and it says it can only go to SP1 as mentioned in my first post.

Is there an updated driver from Dell for using with SP3? The store/repair shop wants to sell me a new wireless usb adapter that they say will work with SP3 but I am simply trying to get what I have to work properly (again). Thanks again for any help.

Brian,

Using the ethernet cable, go to Windows Updates and get all the Windows updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications. You need to have at least Sp2 or SP3 installed.

Check your router settings.  How to login to your wireless router Try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11. The USB adapters will work withe the settings listed and will work on channels 1, 6 or 11. If you had electrial storms in your area or power flickers, sometimes, just powering off the ISP modem/router and the wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds, then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any). Restart your computer.

Try downloading and runing these in order.
