Upgrade to 802.11g?

My new Inspiron 8600 has 802.11b wireless LAN (Intel PRO/Wireless 2100). Is it possible to upgrade it to 802.11g? Can I do this myself? What would I need? Thanks!

spatters1000,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The Intel 2100 card is an 802.11b standard card.  If you wish to upgrade beyond this, you will need to consider a PCMCIA, USB, or 1394 solution.

BobT,

I mistakenly posted this same question in the Dimension/Networking board. When I realized my mistake, I reposted here in the Inspiron/Networking board.

I got a reply to the first post stating that the TrueMobile 1300 was an option. Is that true? I'd like to utilize the mini-PCI port for the upgrade and not take up the external PCI port, if possible.

Thanks.

spatters1000,

The TM 1300 card is a possibility.  This card is available in the MiniPCI or PCMCIA version.  You would have to contact Spare Parts to purchase this.

Yes I had the 2100 b in my 8600 and just upgraded to the 1300 b/g ,ordered it off the dell parts deptartment cost is 49.00 plus shipping, but it is worth every penny,I noticed a huge difference even when still running the B router, no lag at all while web surfing and downloads are blazing fast,Far superior to the 2100 by far.... and installation is a breeze, just snap it in and reconnect the two wires and install the drivers and your good to go........

I'm about to purchase the Inspiron 8600 and would like to upgrade to the 1300 wireless card, but the header in the online store says that "the Intel PRO wireless card is a required component for Centrino mobile technology." If I upgrade to the 1300 or 1400, are those still Centrino-compatible? Thanks.

Here's Intel's Centrino Mobile Technology Overview. I see only the 2100 mentioned. They're "compatible" because all of them are mini-PCI based. But the Centrino trademark is associated with a specific set of Intel products and specifications.

In short, don't worry about the marketing hype from Intel.
