WPA Encryption

Hello all,

I have a two part question-

(1) Do I need XP with SP1 in order to use WPA encryption?

(2) Can I use WPA with my Truemobile 1150 series wireless mini PCI card with the latest driver from Dell?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Khandan,
WAP requires an update from Microsoft AFTER the SP1 has been applied.
If you search the "network" boards, you can probably find the link to the
microsoft download.
I use WAP (psk) AES encryption on my I8200 with a True Mobile 1300 mini pci
connecting to a Linksys wrt54g.
I have removed the dell TM1300 software and let windows XP "manage" the wireless
connection. The reason is that the WAP patch makes the WAP encryption available
under the windows wireless manager but NOT with the Dell Tm1300 drives.
My Linksys wireless router also had to have an update to support WAP.

Overall, it works very well... the connection is solid and secure.
I hope this helps, but please reply if I've left something unanswered.

Hi Don,

Thank you very much for your concise advice. I will update you once I get the SP1 patches together.

Don,

Finally I installed XP SP1 and all the WPA related hotfixes from Microsoft. I followed your suggestion and WPA encryption works well with PSK & TKIP.

Thanks again for your instructions.

Are you able to disable the IEEE 802.1x authentication? The checkbox is disabled, and checked whenever I use WPA security.

THanks

No. I could not disable the IEEE 802.1x authentication. Whenever WPA is enabled, I find that during boot-up, wireless-zero takes too long to recognize (>40 secs) the presence of the wireless network. According to Microsoft, they have addressed this issue with the following patch; however, even after installing this patch I still have the long delay.

Thanks for responding. I found out about that patch after waiting an hour for Dell tech support. I haven't had any drop outs so far (been less than a day).

I'm unfamiliar with the wireless-zero concept you mentioned. What's that about?

Thanks

From what I understand, wireless-zero is the service XP starts to provide automatic configuration for the 802.11 compatible wireless adapters. You can see this by Start -> Control Panel -> Performance & Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Hope this helps you.
