What is a SM Bus Controller?

What type of a device is a SM Bus Controller? I have noticed that under Device Manager / Other devices, I have an unknown device called SM Bus Controller.

If I know what type of device this was I believe I can then find the right drivers for it.

Thanks

Sounds like you may have re-installed Windows XP if you did then you will have to also install the chipset driver.  Without the chipset driver installed you will get the unknown device listing.   The Dell File Library should have the latest chipset driver available for your model.

Download the Intel Chipset installer software from your Dell "Drivers and Downloads" section.

When you install it and restart your computer, the SM Bus Controller error goes away.

(PS: Takes 5 minutes to reboot so go grab a popcorn and watch a movie.)

I have this message on a Dell Studio Slim Desktop 540s. I tried to update this via a third party named "Driver Detective", or defective in my opinion, and their installers are terrible of course. They kept telling me I have to update even more chipsets as well and none of them updated the other chipsets.

"Intel (R) 4 Series Chipset PCI Express Root Port - 2E21" and "Intel (R) 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E" it insists have new drivers.
