XPS 8700 Ethernet not recoginized

I have a XPS 8700 desktop and the Ethernet on the motherboard has stopped working (most of the time). The computer does not recognize that a Ethernet adapter is in the machine.

I have attempted to re-install the drivers many times, but still no recognition.

I then bought a separate ePCI ethernet card, attempted to install it, but when I do, the computer will not even boot up.

There are no settings in the BIOS (or what ever it is called now) to look for hardware conflicts.

Any ideas on how to either get the on board or new ePCI Ethernet to work?

Hi Compboy99,

Thanks for the post. I would first attempt to rule out a possible software failure causing your Ethernet recognition issues if you haven’t already. Starting the system in Safe-mode with networking is a great test environment, and with minimal start ups and drivers running in this mode it’s much easier to pin a failure down to either software or hardware.

Making sure your systems BIOS and Drivers are up to date with the latest released on the My Dell Drivers & Downloads page is also a good troubleshooting step to take with this issue: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/xps-8700/drivers

If adding an Ethernet adapter to your system, It would also be worth checking the on board NIC is disabled in he BIOS, you should find the LAN settings under ‘Advanced’ after entering the BIOS utility:
